Phono Pre with AES AE-3
Thanks, Paul. I've also considered the newest AES PH-1 DJH (w/Jensen Caps and Hexfreds)at Upscale Audio. The biggest drawback is that you basically have to choose to have the unit setup for either MM or MC: it's non-switchable. Besides that drawb...
Phono Pre with AES AE-3
The Eastern Electric MiniMax also seems like a likely candidate as it has provisions for MM/MC low/MC high. It also falls within my budget. Any thoughts on how it would mate with the AE-3 or compare with the phono units already mentioned?
Phono Pre with AES AE-3
My budget would be around $1500 or less, if possible. The Aqvox is a unit I would definitely check out if I go the non-tube route. I don't need the balanced inputs right now, but I guess that would allow for future upgrades.I know that the EAR834p ...
Matched tubes in preamps
I had never heard of someone intentionally mixing/mismatching tubes either, but that's how the literature for the Minimax reads. Perhaps it's curcuit design differs from other stereo preamps? Now, in a non-stereo guitar amp it's perfectly fine but...
AES-3 MKII
I just placed an order for a MKII. Can't wait! Thanks to all who posted comments - I found them all to be both helpful and encouraging :)
AES-3 MKII
Is there much of a difference in construction between the MKII and DJH versions?
AES-3 MKII
Trelja ad Ssglx - Thanks for your responses :)I'm glad to hear that it doesn't require much tweaking to get it to sound good.I'm hoping to pick one up soon - either new or used. I'll be using it to drive a SS power amp for the time being (Sony 55 ...
why does lp have light surface scratch after play?
I vote for paper scuffs.
Musical Fidelity XLPS What cartridge would work?
Which version of the X-LPS are you working with?
vinyl-only setups
Johnnantais - I strongly considered looking at the EAR, but I'm not sure that my current power amp would do it justice. At the moment, I'm looking at a tube-integrated as being the simplest (cost effective) solution. When I do decide to upgrade the...
Record is noisier after cleaning:
You may have added some static to the the LP during the cleaning process. I generally use a zerostat gun after cleaning with the VPI.I have never used the VPI fluid or brush so I can't really comment on either of those. I've been using the Mofi br...
vinyl-only setups
Would the EAR 834P w/volume control have enough output to drive a power amp properly? I guess that it would depend upon the input sensitivity of the amp. My X-LPS will drive my Sony power amp, but probably not as well as a true preamplifier.
vinyl-only setups
Thanks, NormanIt seems that the this kind of setup would limit the number of gear choices that are available. Not many phono preamps have attenuators. They also may not have adequate output to properly drive a power amp.I just might end up going w...
Does colored vinyl sound as bad as picture discs?
I've yet to hear a picture disc that doesn't sound really noisy, so I avoid them. I tend to agree with the "thinner vinyl" explanation.I don't have many colored-vinyl discs, but my red vinyl copy of "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" by The Flaming...
Mofi Cleaners
Thanks for the tips, guys. I wish I had more info about the new Mofi washes before I re-ordered the old stuff. Doug - I'll definitely use fresh brushes for the Enzyme and final rinses.John - I think that I might try your current method: Use up the...
