Building a new room I built a basement listening room with similar dimensions to yours in a previous home, following a Rives Audio design. The walls were built with staggered studs, where the outside was on one row of studs and the inside was on a different row of st...
High end cartridge made in USA? Soundsmith makes moving iron and strain gauge cartridges in Peekskill, NY. I've visited the facility with the Connecticut Audio Society and watched them at work. I think the styli may come from Japan but the rest of the cartridge is US made.
Your favorite LP nobody has ever heard of Audiogon seems to have trimmed off the subject line where I gave the title and label. The album is "Country Negro Jam Session" on Arhoolie.
Your favorite LP nobody has ever heard of It's an LP of 1959 field recordings of obscure Mississippi bluesmen. The performances are raw and electrifying. Even better, its a superb recording. On the right gear you can hear birds chattering in the trees way off to the side, seemingly from o...
VPI new stuff... Dodgealum, I talked to both Matt and Harry Weisfeld about that point during the show. They both said that the arm's mass is adjustable. The factory can insert a steel rod into the arm to increase its mass so it can be used with low compliance cart...
Nottingham Space Deck and Space Arm question? By "at the pivot point" do you mean the arm mount? There are two horizontal set screws in the arm mount that tighten the aluminum collet against the arm pillar. Loosening those set screws allows you to move the arm up or down to set VTA.
Vacuuming every time? LAST revisited? I'm not sure which LAST products you're referring to with the numbers 1, 2, 3; I've always seen the stuff called by names like "record preservative" or "stylus cleaner." In any case, back in the early 1980s I called the LAST company and was put th...
Does anyone know about Mana tables? Here are some set up instructions posted by John Watson on the long defunct Mana forum: "BTW, regarding "The Ring or Tone" on Mana. Simply set three of the spikes so that an allen wrench will just fit between glass and frame. This is the proper di...
Soundsmith Straingauge SG-200 cartridge system Dougdeacon, did you ever find the high value MM cartridge that impressed you so much?
SMc Audio: The Interocitor One thoughts? I can't offer any opinion on the product, but the name is witty. The Interocitor was a communication device in the classic '50s sci fi movie "This Island Earth." Aliens sent them to prominent Earth scientists as kits. If you could assemble the Int...
Choices, turntable purchase choices? You might add the new $1300 VPI Traveler to your short list. It was on silent display at the recent NYC Audio Show. Of course I have no idea what it sounds like but it looked and felt like a solid, substantial product. The price would leave you a...
Oil For Nottingham Spacedeck? I have a PDF of the circa 2008 NA Dealer manual that covers all their turntables. Email me at rdoorack at yahoo dot com and I'll send it to you.
Tonearm for Pink Triangle TT The Funk Firm is the successor to Pink Triangle. Perhaps you should consider Funk's FX-R tonearm? In any case, a call to Funk might be worthwhile to ask for their suggestions about what arms work well on the old PT.
Lehmann Black Cube question Thanks for remembering my efforts from long ago, Viridian. Bruce Kennett wrote the review of the Black Cube that appeared in "Listener" and he thought it sucked too, although he worded that opinion much more eloquently! I know I wrote a couple of ...
Lehmann Black Cube question The original Black Cube was the worst - sounding device I've ever heard in my system. It was efectively a PRaT filter: everything played through it came out sounding torpid and uninvolving. To cite one example, on the wonderfully driving "Sing, Si... |
