Are Carver Preamps Any Good?
Carver's big claims to fame were it's amazingly powerful amps for the money and the truly Amazing Loudspeakers. An old amp like the TFM-35 was seriously powerful and fairly musical, but it took a non-Carver pre-amp to get the most out of it.Those ...
Is this Possible????
Thanks for the comments!I plan to use a Playstation 3 for the source in the home theater setup. I have a modded Oppo player as the source for the tube preamp. I used to have a expensive tube CD player, but found the 350 dollar Oppo was always bett...
Looking for the "better sub"
BTW...I saw a picture of your room at another forum (very nice looking). The curtains covering the wall behind the Maggies are a bad idea though. The rear sound wave is your friend (it's there to help you), it should strike a live wall...and not h...
Looking for the "better sub"
Couldn't agree less with the statement that lack of high-level inputs makes JL Fathom unsuitable for 2CH audiophile use.>>>After trying both hook-up methods, I'm always a little surprised when someone claims they are the same.Using the hi...
Looking for the "better sub"
>> "JL Fathom 113....I would have ordered one, but no high level inputs turns a great sub into a home theater product in my eyes. They blew it." <<Really?....I don't understand how you have come to that conclusion about subwoofers?>...
What's better than the Jolida JD100
Thanks for all the comments. After a lot of research I ordered a Jolida JD100 with the Level 1 mods an the level 2 tubes from Underwood.Cheers,R.
Maggies and Subwoofer...again
Thanks for the comments. I'm currently using a tweaked Odyssey Stratos Amp with a cap and board upgrade along with a Rogue Metis tube pre-amp. I'm very happy with the sound so far and nothing is broken-in yet. I plan to get the Mye stands and next...
What's better than the Jolida JD100
Very nice pictures, Robbob! I am curious if your Stratos cooks your Rogue?>>>Are you talking heat? The Stratos runs very cool. It's been playing at high levels for days and is barely warm. I'm very impressed with it thus far, though it's ...
What's better than the Jolida JD100
Based on his comment on the Jolida and also on subwoofer coherence with Magnepan 1.6/QR I agree that MrTennis does indeed have issues with his system and most probably his listing room.I've been experimenting with SVS and Martin Logan Abyss subwoo...
Pre-amp to Sub question
I have since tried using the pre-outs and the hi level. I was surprised to find that the hi-level was superior, so I'm quite happy now, not to mention that this manner of connection gets more out of the subs.CheersRobert
Martin Logan Abyss with Magnepan 1.6/QR's???
Duke, thanks for that reply. Very informative. I'm leaning towards a single Vandersteen to start and then adding a second if I feel the need. I'm not very concerned about coherence since I've had reasonable success even with the sluggish SVS sub. ...
Martin Logan Abyss with Magnepan 1.6/QR's???
i own a pair of 1.6s. i would not use a sub for music. the loss of coherence is a problem.>>>Sounds like you have a problem with your room. I've heard two subs (Vandersteen and REL) match well with the 1.6's. Vandersteen is my top pick af...
Minimax Preamp vs........the world?
I contacted both outfits, but in the end I went with the Metis, which I think will be a bit more lively with the Magnepans, plus it has the remote. Bill from EE says the webpage info is wrong and he forgot to change it to reflect the current 700. ...
Minimax Preamp vs........the world?
According to the EE website, these are the specs on the minimax...• Frequency Response: 10Hz - 150kHz• THD: 0.015%• Output: 2V• Signal to Noise Ration: 93dB• Input Impedance: 100K Ohm• Output Impedance: 700 OhmThe Rogue Metis specs...from the manu...
Minimax Preamp vs........the world?
And to further complicate matters, someone e-mailed me saying that this Rogue Metis preamp would be as good/better and it has a remote. Cost is the same as the Minimax. The Rogue also has great reviews and seems to have deeper bass, which could be...
