Which Universal Player has Beefiest Power Supply? The Sony NS-999ES and Denon DVD-2900 both have fairly large linear power supplies. Redbook CD is fairly good with either, and both play SACD. Only the Denon handles DVD-Audio. The similar current Denon appears to be the DVD-3910. The DVD-2910 seem...
Best planar, elctro......budget and room concerns Eminent Technology LFT-VIIIa with Sound Anchor stands or the Magnepan MG-1.6 with Mye Sound stands. Either is excellent.
If I use a Benchmark DAC-1 In my experience, there is no difference in the sound quality with various transports. Other listeners over at Audio Asylum have reported differences between transports, so my findings are not universally held. If the opportunity to test (beg or b...
Preamps with Dual Main Out? Why not simply use a Y-splitter from the output of the preamp to create the four outputs for the amplifiers? As long as the preamplifier can drive the load (the input impedance of the amplifiers will drop by half) it should present no problem. Giv...
Vandersteen 3A Sig vs. Von Schweikert VR4 Jr. Seriously consider a planar speaker. The Eminent Technology LFT-VIIIa or Magnepan MG-1.6 would provide excellent sound at a much lower cost than either the Vandy or VS. A planar must be placed 3-4' from the rear wall, isn't small, and won't blow d...
I need a fantastic DAC Benchmark DAC-1. It is superior to my previous Wadia 25 in nearly every way and is much less sensitive to transports than most of the competition. Good luck!
Upgrade bug - speaker choice and your opinion Try the SEAS Thor kit from Madisound. A little work and for less than $2000 you'll have a speaker that would easily retail for over twice that amount. Extremely accurate with well-defined solid bass and fine imaging. The cabinet is nicely finished...
magnepan 3.5. Midrange noise The midrange driver is a planar magnetic and may have loose wires. These wires are the "voice coil" for this kind of speaker and they can delaminate in some cases. Get a flashlight and examine the driver. The wires often only separate at the edges...
Speaker choices, $1000-2000 Smooth & Musical SEAS Thor kit from Madisound, Eminent Technology LFT-VIIIa with Sound Anchor stands, Magnepan MG-1.6 with MyeSound stands, and Vandersteen 2CE Signature.None of these need subwoofers for most music. The Thor is a darkhorse because it is a kit, but...
Pre-amp recommendations for Bryston 4B SST If only digital sources are used, get a Benchmark DAC-1 and run it straight into the amp with the balanced outputs. Pure magic.
mono amp for sub Try the Outlaw M200 (www.outlawaudio.com).
Chord 64, ECD-1, Audio Logic, Dodson DAC opinions Make certain to add the Benchmark DAC-1 to the list. It is at least as good as any of those under consideration and will be the least transport sensitive. Don't let the plain cosmetics and low price raise any concern - the DAC-1 is an excellent di...
Has any one compared Monarchy 22b/c & Benchmark Greetings. Currently I have both a Benchmark DAC-1 and a Monarchy Model 33 DAC/preamp. Reviews have been posted on AudioAsylum and you may want to check them out. The short answer is that the Benchmark is more resolving, lower in noise, and more t...
Audio Refinement pre5-dsp VS Lexicon MC-1 The Pre-2DSP is the current preamp/processor from Audio Refinement. It is a simple design but has very limited bass management capabilities and lacks the newer surround decoding modes such as Dolby Prologic II. Also, the ergonomic are somewhat qui...
What affordable amp should go w/ magnepan 1.6? Try the Outlaw Audio M200 monoblocks (www.outlawaudio.com). They drive the MG-1.6's very well. Also get a set of Mye Sound stands, these offer a real improvement over the stock stands. Good luck! |
