the Listening Room Thank you all for your responses thus far. Some of these response are a little bit what I expected--some are not. I would like to comment on a few. First is aesthetics. Room acoustics do not have to be ugly. If you have an existing room and you wa...
how to set Nero Burning room speeds? help I think you can do this in the Nero Toolkit. I've never actually done it, so I don't know. But if you go to options you can select a CD speed and click apply. I assume that will slow it down to the correct speed. The toolkit will also test the CD ...
how to set Nero Burning room speeds? help By the way, it always defaults to the maximum write speed, so you have to change it manually each time. If there is a way to get it to default to a lower speed, I haven't found it yet.
how to set Nero Burning room speeds? help When you pull up the burn dialog box there is a window for the write speed. The only time this doesn't come up is if your hardware does not support multiple write speeds.
Levinson owners, what cables are u using? Audioquest Lapis and Diamond. I recommend the Lapis X3. I do not have any experience with AQs newer line. As for digital the Audioquest Falcon AES/EBU has been my favorite. I've compared it to the Cardas and Orchid.
neutrality vs. realism This should be a good discussion. First, consider the older amplifiers with 0.001% distortion. Lots of feedback to give great specs, and terrible sound. I think we have come to realize that specifications do not equal great sound, but your questio...

Sherlock Holmes needs clues Platos suggestion is a good one for testing the CD player. Whatever you do find, please do post it here--now I'm curious.
Sherlock Holmes needs clues Judth: We use the ETF software a calibrated microphone and pre-amp from Germany, and couple all of it through a PC computer. This provides the noise burst. The detector is at the listening position, but we generally vary it with about 6 sequential...
Sherlock Holmes needs clues Doing a lot in acoustical engineering the first thing I would do is plot the frequency response in the room. You could do a simple 1/3 octave plot, but this is probably a little crude for what you are looking for--still it would be a start. I woul...
Sound Proofing 101 In an apartment this is really difficult. If you can get the book "A compendium of materials for Noise Control" from the library check it out. It's out of print, but can be found at many universities. What you will find is that noise travels throu...
Buying speaker and amps from Canada to the US.Tax? I believe Rgd is correct on duty, but duty is different from Tax. Nafta does not protect us against the taxes. Fortunately, tax going from Canada to the US is not the problem--it's going from US to Canada where Canada charges the VAT which is pret...
Slight cracle from one channel of Jolida SJ302a Two areas, and sometimes both are involved. A bad tube. You can try changing left and right channel tubes. The other possible problem (and "crackle" sounds like this could very well be it) would be a capacitor going bad. That one is a little trick...
Burning a CD part II Sogood--I think you are right about that. It's not really a pit, but something anti-reflective (a dye makes sense, but I honestly don't know) to simulate one.
