Netflix and Tivo to stream internet movies to Tivo
Just saw some things streaming from Netflix through xbox. I was pretty happy with the quality. It's stereo only--no 5.1. The image quality is not quite that of DVD, but better than many things coming over dishnet. I do have a high speed connection...
MBA project - audiophile computer transport
Okay--maybe we are getting somewhere. First, I realize the 360S is not the greatest--but it is consistent for my comparisons. So what is really being compared is the iPod off the Wadia dock, wmv files off an XP computer (yes, please tell me how to...
MBA project - audiophile computer transport
Steve:Thanks. I guess my question now is, how do you get a "low jitter bit perfect digital computer source"? In theory the wmv files should be bit-perfect. They are lossless and on digital comparison once uncompressed should be perfect. So that le...

I think your initial concept is good, but here's the issue: what makes it sound better? The increase in media servers says to me that yes, there is a market for a good machine that export the data "perfectly". Here are some of my experiences thus ...
Netflix and Tivo to stream internet movies to Tivo
They are doing the same with XBOX so I'll probably try it then. Image quality does depend on your bandwidth. There is hi-speed internet and then HI-speed. Our provider has 3 levels of bandwidth. I'm currently on the middle level. Most residential ...
Bagpipes anyone?
I don't have any bagpipe recordings, but I saw this post and immediately thought of times that I heard them live. They are LOUD and complex. Their sound of even a small group seems to come at you from all directions, even if you are outdoors. So m...
Anything new with digital room correction?
Mike--I actually did mean digital end. My point was getting a really good D/A conversion. You are right most CD players do have digital out--but my concern was where will the D/A conversion take place. If the CD player is a top shelf unit you woul...
Most Important?
Shadome--sorry I missed that in your second paragraph. I should read more carefully. I will say that I do subscribe to the "weakest link" theory to a large degree. The system should work in balance and great speakers with a lousy source or lousy s...
Anything new with digital room correction?
Mmike: It's true most CD players have digital out--but in that case where will you do the D/A. Most Cd players do not have a digital input. Some very high end ones do, but most don't. And I'm also considering the possibility of analog sources such...
Most Important?
Has anyone even considered the room in this thread? About 50% of the sound we hear is indirect--coming from the speaker interaction with the room. Putting a small investment in the room can frequently yeild results that could not be had for 10 tim...
Anything new with digital room correction?
It's certainly better if you go from digital out to processor before converting to analog. Not everyone has a separate transport (or source) and DAC, in which case an additional D/A and A/D is required. Even so, I do not agree that the digital cor...
iPod docking station - Belkin vs Wadia vs Arcam
The Wadia unit does not require a DAC. If you want to get the best you would use a DAC with it, but it has analog outputs.
Anything new with digital room correction?
Why does it need to be digital? If you want the purest way to deal with room modes operating 350 Hz and below and not messing with the signal above why not use the Rives Audio PARC. Here's a link to a reveiw.
To those who support idea a room isn't large enuff
Shakey offers good advice. We wrote an article on this and equated it to a kitchen. You wouldn't put a Viking commercial stove/oven with 8 burners in an apartment kitchen of 15 sq feet. Likewise you shouldn't put giant loudspeakers in an 11 x 13 r...
A Little Technical Help with the VPI Strobe
Stringreen--can you elaborate on what you found to be better with the better power cord? What cord did you use? Did you try others? I'm just curious--I have upgraded power cords on very "critical" piece of equipment but I have not ever experimente...
