Speakers sound too bright.
@mvanwoert I have played with ML speakers for decades and a few things to keep in mind are: 1) They are line sources that radiate in both directions and 2) they are a capacitive load not a resistive load.   When I looked up the OP's speakers, ...
Stereo mode in phone stage going out
@nicholsr  usually about the 4th/5th song is when the (always) right channel goes about 98% out in stereo mode When you say 98% out, is that 98% of the time or 98% of the volume? I suspect a loose contact around the base of the tonearm cable....
Need to learn about Audio Research
@whart  Not to mention his "we don't actually listen to our amplifiers, we let our customers do that". He described his amplifiers in engineering terms "unconditionally stable into any load". I am a bit surprised that nobody has done a digital ...
Need to learn about Audio Research
@fsonicsmith I always thought the "straight wire with gain" is one of the most meaningless cliche's among the thousands in audio. Two preamps can be "straight wires with gain" and yet sound completely different, particularly if one if solid stat...
Do I need upgraded power cables?
@bzawa  I don't understand not using a power conditioner with an amp. I would have guessed that conditioned power would be good for it. Do amps not need conditioning? All mains-driven amplifiers convert incoming Alternating Current (AC) to Dir...
Do I need upgraded power cables?
@wofford  I will leave you with this, sea salt tastes different than mineral salt, and pink salt tastes different still!  They are all salt! They are all mainly salt.  None is 100% pure sodium chloride which is what we mainly think of as salt....
What are your go to LP's for evaluating new gear or new tubes?
@billpete  The latest Stuart and Sons 108-note concert grand piano also hits a very low 16-Hz - see Audiogon Discussion Forum on pianos! As far as I know, there is no technical reason why CDs should not go very subsonic - close to 0-Hz.
What are your go to LP's for evaluating new gear or new tubes?
@billpete  I took a vinyl copy of the Telarc 1812 when I auditioned the Holbo turntable!  Almost all my vinyl pre-dates CDs, and I have a few dbx companded records which I can no longer play because my dbx capable player got stolen, together with...
What are your go to LP's for evaluating new gear or new tubes?
@billpete  I'll have to look to see if I have any Hyperion. Sounds familiar but not sure. Are they D2D or just very well done? Who are the pianists? On the Shostakovich, the pianist is the brilliant Canadian Marc-Andre Hamelin. The newly relea...
What are your go to LP's for evaluating new gear or new tubes?
I am into classical, just getting back into vinyl, so the latest vinyl releases from Hyperion suit me, especially their new recording of Beethoven Triple Concerto and their recent vinyl release of the Shostakovich Piano Concertos.  I have used the...
Linn Bedrok LP12 Plinth Upgrade
@newton_john Yes, and I studied crystallography for three years in the Cambridge lab set up by the Bragg father and son pair who invented X-ray diffraction crystallography.  Well before computers and computer graphics, and before Crick and Watson...
Short in my system?
Bit of advice from Down Under - use wool carpets!  Inherently free of static buildup ...
Linn Bedrok LP12 Plinth Upgrade
@newton_john  Thanks - exactly what I was looking for.  I will read "diamond hardened" to mean a "Diamond-Like Carbon Coating" which is likely to be plasma sputtered onto a substrate such as tool steel in a vacuum under tightly controlled conditi...
Rumble - turntable or background noise DG LP
Suggest you take a 'good' record and a 'bad' record to your local HiFi dealer.  Explain that you'd like to listen on a good turntable to see where the rumble might be coming from.  There is the chance of a turntable sale if it is not on the record...
Linn Bedrok LP12 Plinth Upgrade
What exactly does 'diamond hardened' mean in this context?  I am looking for a metallurgical explanation, please!
