Just how much do speakers suppose to vibrate?
There are varying design philosophies on the issue whether a speaker should resonate to quickly disperse energy or be completely inert. As sbank mentioned above Totem sells a product to reduce vibration and by the marketing they would fall into th...
Schitt Audio Still in business???
Try messaging Baldur or Jason Stoddard over at Head-Fi if your emails are going unanswered. Those are the two founders and they seem quite active there.Email support was a little slow(2 days between messages) a few years ago when I tried/returned ...
Pros & Cons of Buying an Integrated with Built-in DAC?
@bcgator I both agree and disagree. USB receiver chips and clocks have come a long way. If you are using modern D/S chips these are imporant factors to the overall performance. This is the only kind of DAC you will find in fully integrated units.P...
Why do almost all women today hate home audio?
If a woman tells you that you need to 'get with the times' and haul away your stereo then perhaps she is testing if you have a backbone? If it is simply a matter of disinterest then I would point the finger at the lack of a real social factor in th...
Pros & Cons of Buying an Integrated with Built-in DAC?
DACs seem to outdate in 5yr cycles(with some exceptions for niche or unconventional products off-the-shelf chips are used which stay current for quite a few years.) We're at the end of the current cycle by the looks of things; the Sabre 9018 has b...
Portable Radio Quality?!?
Some of the cheap Sansa MP3 players have built in AM/FM. If you combined that with a cheap speaker(think bluetooth speaker with line input that you could pick up at the cellphone store) you'd have a portable solution that you could carry on you pr...
Conversion to DSD: Does It Eliminate Digital Glare?
My system is computer fronted, I eliminated glare by swapping my playback software to Jplay. DAC is NOS/Redbook only. Only CD player on hand is mass market from the 80s which sounds like ice. Perhaps it's not the DAC but CD playback?
Speakers that open up at low volume levels
I'm too interested in this question. I'm no engineer so this information may be incorrect however what I've been able to piece together is that higher effeciency speakers are generally superior at lower levels due to thermal compression in lower e...
Overcoming ba(e)droom accoustics
Have you viewed my picture of the room? This site may load better:http://imgur.com/8mZZ0qoNone of the doors/closet/dressers can be blocked. Other than what can be seen in the picture there is a mirror just left over the dresser. Behind the camera ...
Best DAC
I would look into DACs which are noted as being source agnostic or into splitting your budget for components such as the Regen making the rounds which filter the line between PC & DAC.Personally haven’t tried the above however I have compared ...
Speakers that are very accurate sounding but don't produce an emotional connection.
Truth be told my most memorable experiances are with cheap mobile components and headphones. Don't underestimate environmental factors. Keeping warm under a blanket, candle flickering, stars visable because the whole town is blacked out...There wa...
Speakers that are very accurate sounding but don't produce an emotional connection.
In all likelihood I'm the youngest member chiming in here, and in my experience I have noticed the opposite effect. I find on equipment with a more organic or natural tone lost energy in transients and vocals which remove my connection to the arti...
Forward or recessed sound?
That depends on why the amplifier takes on the stage that it does. Warm bold forward sound turns me off as does a lazy laid back tone. However I'm happy with either dynamic & sparkly or a neutral 'just the facts' presentation. In point so long ...
Silicon Under 60, Slim Pickings?
I have a tendency to fall into the 'latest and greatest' trap, I suppose that's part of what I'm struggling with here. Could I have some more opinions on exceeding my speaker's max power rating? I'd like to play it cautious with my speakers so if ...
Silicon Under 60, Slim Pickings?
Thanks for the recs so far, I'll dig in and do some reading.I do have some vintage receivers on hand already; Sherwoods from 69' and 71' respectively. I'm not looking for something that needs restoration, I think I'll stay within the 21st century ...
