Upgrading cartridge used or new?
I think Swampwalder's advice is spot on. That is what I did and have been very happy with this decision. Eventually, due to my own carelessness, I had the cartridge sent to soundsmith for a new cantlever/tip (bent it) and that was also an excellen...
Preamp for Atma-sphere s30
Just curious how the s30 is with your Merlin's. Enough power? Been considering trying some Atma-sphere's for some time with my Merlin's.

Placette linestage vs. Adcom 750 passive
I agree with you Pubul57 at the end of the road but for the $'s, especially second hand, at least in my system, the Placette RVC definitely took my system up a significant notch. BTW - I haven't heard the Dodd but suspect it is a great value and I...
Placette linestage vs. Adcom 750 passive
I have used a Placette with Merlin's as well. It was a huge improvement over an audio research pre I had previous to it. Incredibly clean sound, very smooth. I now have a Joule but have kept the Placette as I couldn't part with it. the Joule may b...
Atma-sphere S-30 with Reference 3A?
A little off topic, I've been thinking about acquiring an atma-sphere OTL to use with my Merlin's. Currently use Quicksilver V4's with a Joule 100 mk3 amp. Just curious if you think the S-30 would provide enough power. I listen in a relatively sma...
newbie, disappointed, curious..
This kind of thing happens. I've had people agree to purchase an item, then they backed out. When I complained, they started accusing me of trying to rip them off and if I gave them bad feedback they would say all sorts of bad things about me. I'v...
Has anyone heard the Soundsmith cartridges?
I just got a cartridge man re-tipped back from them. It was surprisingly easy to set up, easier then the original one for some reason on my TT/arm to match to both null points and it sounds "fantastic". I bent the original stylus by accident and f...
Mapleshade tweaks
I purchased their power strip and my experience was simillar to ehaller. It seemed really cheap and unwieldy but inserted into the system, really did bring out much more detail and extension. One problem. It seemed so sensitive to all the wires ar...
What to expect in a TT upgrade?
Thank you all for these responses. The discussion has drifted a bit from my orignial inquiry. For the record, I have decided to increase my efforts in optimizing my current TT set-up that would included purchase of a replacement cartridge as my "c...
considering a Maplenoll
I had an Athena a while back. When it was set up correctly it sounded quite good, but my biggest gripe, and there were many, was water oxidation in the tube that would make it all the way to the tone arm....I bought the plenum...that was supposed ...
Cars. What does the typical audiophile drive?
1985 Porsche red Carerra Coupe w/120,000 miles. A lot of fun though with three young children it spends too much time in the garage. My son insists that I don't sell it. Wonder what he's thinking?
upgrading CD player results
My experience was that that the addition of an Ack! V. 1.3 with my older Audio Research CD-1 was a quantum leap in musicality. Really satisfying for the money, and on the used market these days w/the new v.2.0 I think a real deal.
Personal amp evolution
To the best of my recollection:1970's in high school now vintage fisher tube ampand also a harman kardan tube amp.1980's Threshold Stasis s-100 I think it was. 100 watts per side. I sold it cheap to my dad who's really enjoyed it.Late 1980's Audio...
quicksilver amps and preamps any thoughts ??
I have the V4's and the background is dead quiet. If you go up to the amps themselves with no music playing, you can hear a slight hum but nothing at all over the speakers. My Merlin's were a lot noiser with the Audio Research D-125 amp I used to ...
