VPI Setup - What Happened?
Another possibility -- you lost all or part of the diamond from the end of the cantilever. The symptoms you describe suggest it.
William Z Johnson RIP
My condolences to his family and friends. I never had the privilege of meeting him, but I have for many years been an admirer and user of the products he designed, and am grateful to him for the many hours of enjoyment I have had as a result of hi...
Class D amps
Actually, there are a number of Class D amps available for Home Audio. Bel Canto, for example, offers a number of Class D amps. I believe NuForce does so also. There are others as well. The real issue has been acceptance of Class D by audiophiles. ...
ProAc D40??
I was gonna say... You left a zero off the end of your price range! ;)
ProAc D40??
I listened to them several months ago at a dealer's "manufacturer's night" hooked up to over a hundred thousand dollar's worth of very highly regarded electronics. They sounded terrible. The Proac 38s playing in the next room sounded much, much be...
Newbie help how to store and backup iTunes library
For the most part, my understanding is that external hard drives do not play well with both PCs and with Macs -- you sort of have to decide in advance which way you are going, because the hard drives have to be formatted differently for the two op...
Linn LP12 Bearing Lube
I have an LP12, and have used Singer sewing machine oil as the lubricant on the bearing for years (got the suggestion from another long-time LP12 owner). It works fine.
A great shipping tip for all Merry Christmas
Thanks. That is extremely useful info. I have been hesitant to either buy or sell any equipment too heavy for UPS to ship -- this is great to know.
How Many Audiophiles Have Do You Know?
Like xxmarkxx, I was introduced to the hobby by an audiophile, and except for a few dealers who I've met who got into the business because they loved it, I don't think I've met one since. But like Nietzschelover, I don't ask and hardly ever mentio...
Upgrade choices
I agree with Inna - I don't think any of those tables is going to be a significant improvement over the Technics - which is a highly regarded table even before being modded. I'd look at a cartridge upgrade instead.
"Neutral/Clear Amp vs. Dark Amp"
Also the Cambridge Audio 840W - definitely not "dark"
I didn’t know that Did you guys know that?
National Geographic has documented that the last "fact" to appear in the Absolute Sound was in February of 1978. Neither HP or RH has troubled themselves with nasty little inconveniences like "facts" since. It's an entertainment magazine, not journ...
Are CD players dead
Pettyofficer, I was only prognosticating, not advocating. I like CDs and SACDs, and vinyl, and even cassette tapes, and have a healthy number of each, along with some pretty respectable equipment for playing all of them. But I have also watched the...
Are CD players dead
Yep. ;)Goodness, such drama. "Left behind". You store owner makes it sound like the Rapture. There are literally tens of millions of CDs out there, owned by people who will, like LP owners, keep and sell and trade them for years to come. So CD pla...

I'm another fan of the Empire 208 -- I purchased one used and had it updated by Mike Paschetto at Analog Engineering. You can see a picture on my system page.I also fondly remember the Empire 698, which was elegant, beautiful and persnickety --I c...
