Revel Salon2 vs. B & W 802D vs. Wilson W.P.7?
Briangrarcom: The Wilson tweeter rings between 4 khz. and 8 khz. as a result of a break-up mode occurring higher in the frequency spectrum. It is plainly audible to me and to many others, and has been commented upon and written about at length. It...
Questions about Preamp Tubes
With tube preamps, tube replacement is not the problem: the above posters are correct about small-signal tubes, and I would add that the studies done in the 1950's all confirmed that longest life and best sound is achieved by keeping gear using sm...
Revel Salon2 vs. B & W 802D vs. Wilson W.P.7?
None of the above. The Salons and B&W's have really good tweeters that will show up the grain in those electronics, and the WP 7 has a titanium tweeter which suffers from resonance problems that will drive you out of the room with grainy gear ...
Dartzeel 108 vs Ayre Mr-X
The two amps would have to be compared in the same system for a comparison to be fair, and even at that, one amp would be penalized due to synergy issues -- arguably, the best comparison would be one amp in that amp designer's system of choice ver...
is getting a tube pre a valid option with ss amp?
You need to be careful to ensure that the output impedance of the preamp is at least ten times less than the input impedance of the amp. The problem is that virtually all tube preamps except those that use output transformers have high-ish output ...
Best phono pre in the 500.00 price range Used
Etbaby: The Audio Research LS-3 is a line stage and does not contain a phono stage.
What did you replace your Aerial 10T's with?
If you are a drummer, you would like the Escalante Fremonts, which were designed by the guy who designed the Wilson Whaam, WattPuppy 3 and Grand Slamm. Mastering engineer Steve Hoffman owns a pair, as do reviewers Greg Weaver and Dave Thomas. Beca...
Which speaker from a few years ago?
That's a gigantic room that will make all speakers except those with prodigious bass sound tinny/hollow. Each of the speakers you mention is a very good speaker, but they all lack horsepower for a room of that size.I rarely suggest this, but assum...
Leaving amplifiers on all the time???
Tvad: Generally speaking, as long as gear is operated within its design parameters, it is not so much heat per se that damages or wears out electronic equipment, but thermal cycles experienced by gear getting hot and then going cold when turned on...
Leaving amplifiers on all the time???
I made the following two posts in a thread last week:Post #1:"The general answer to your question is that all high-end equipment should be left on 24/7, with a couple of exceptions and a caveat. There are two reasons to keep gear constantly powered...
Short history on legacy speakers
Rar1: Thanks for the info, but you should have cited to Wikipedia's entry for "Acoustic Research" and used quotation marks -- you copied your entry word-for word from Wikipedia, but did not attribute authority.
Best high current high power $5k amp for MBL 121
The only tube amps I am aware of that can drive mbl's are the CAT amps (the original JL-1 was allegedly specifically built to drive the 101E). They are finicky, however, and require someone with patience and money. Not to be a pessimist, but I wish...
budget component in high-end system?
I run a Chinese-made Doge 6 tubed CD player, which cost me about $1,600 with upgraded tubes, in a system that is otherwise high-end by most people's standards ($100k+). I've paid a fair amount for digital gear in the past, but won't do it anymore ...
5 Years or More?
Advents: sixteen (16) years.Dunlavy's: six (6) yearsV.A. Mahlers: six (6) years, but they were in my second system most of the time.
Rowland JRDG 501 and Wilson Audio
Soundoc:The Focal titanium tweeter Wilson uses has a resonance that is audible in the presence region, between 4,000 to 8,000 Hz. There has been a lot written about the problem here and at the Asylum. In any event, go listen for yourself.
