Does anyone care to ask an amplifier designer a technical question? My door is open.
@grgr4blu I have enjoyed posts by Ralph and Ramtubes on this forum. They are both highly qualified as designers and manufacturers. They both provide answers to technical questions about gear. Sometimes, they include opinions based on their under...

@fleschler  EAR 912 with tubes rated for 100,000 hours and non-microphonic. I have looked at the rating of many tubes, last I looked Tim was using 7DJ8s. Those are 10,000 hour tubes If you get 10,000 be happy. Most tubes are rated for 10,000 hou...

@pwhinson  I used to think that power was power with only minor differences in the sound.  However in trying to decide on the best amplifier for my Thiel 2.4s I've auditioned the Bel Canto m600s (their current production monblock), the Bryston 4 ...
RMS Power?
@almarg  Imhififan, thanks for providing the additional link. Al, First please accept my sincere apology for anything I may has said to cause you offence. This has been a muddy thread, made worse by unvetted quotes from poor sources. These I hav...

@atmasphere If the capacitance of a cable causes rolloff, is that an artifact?
RMS Power?
@imhififan https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Root_mean_squareThanks, this is most interesting. I note that the coefficient (mulitplier) for peak to peak is 2.8 for the sine, 3.5 for the sawtooth and 1.0 for the square. (divide those numbers in half fo...
RMS Power?
@kijanki @almarg That author’s conclusions:It should be noted that the term “RMS power” is (mis)used in the consumer audio industry. In that context, it means the average power when reproducing a single tone, but it’s not actually the RMS value of...
RMS Power?
@kijanki Al, I was right (he is not going to get it). RMS value of ANY sinusoidal waveform, having peak at 200 (of any unit) is 141 (of the same unit). 100W would be an average power value corresponding to VrmsxIrms and equal to half of peak power...
Running Benchmark AHB2 in bridged mode and 4 Ohm Speaker
@kijanki I think, we are talking about two different things. I have never mentioned actual amplifier’s power at clipping but rather manufacturer’s specifications (that are quite different), that calls for power doubling (or close to it). I have al...

@jlhaudio Roger, why did you switch the input to the 12AT7 from the 12AX7 on the Ram10 mkll? Along with changing the bias system from fixed to cathode bias and changing the B+ I found the 12AT7 was a better choice. It has a lower saturation volt...
Running Benchmark AHB2 in bridged mode and 4 Ohm Speaker
@kijanki  Feedback lowers output impedance. You cannot make exact doubling of the power if DF=10. Of course feedback lowers output impedance. However that has nothing do to with output power at clipping. Its not like there is some resistor in t...
RMS Power?
@almarg  And then please where 141 watts comes from. What kind of inbetween power is that to be called? As I have said, it is the RMS value of a sinusoidal power waveform having a peak value of 200 watts. Well its not. We have agreed that a 100 w...
Running Benchmark AHB2 in bridged mode and 4 Ohm Speaker
@georgehifi  Got a feeling there’s a couple of latent shills helping out too Likely indeed. The marketing guy did step in at one point. We really gave it a good shot.Check out this thread claiming there is no RMS power.https://forum.audiogon.com...
Running Benchmark AHB2 in bridged mode and 4 Ohm Speaker
@georgehifi I think Benchmark has done an excellent job of convincing everyone to buy two. Hail to marketing. All those who follow can do is quote the party line. We will never get them to understand.
RMS Power?
@almarg  To be sure it’s clear, I absolutely did not say that "RMS power" varies as a function of time, although I can see how my statement might have been misread. I said that...... what the words "RMS power" literally mean is the RMS value of a...
