Quattro Fil vs. Siltech SQ80b
I can't comment on the very fine Siltech cable, but I have used the Coincident and currently have the Quattro Fil ICs in my system.I love the QF, which has tons of detail and tonal information without thinness (at least to my picky ears). When I f...
Rogue 66 or AES pre?
I'm a bit late to the party but I just wanted to second the vote for the Rogue 66. I've had mine for a little over a year and it's a great preamp. Benefits from a tube roll, as stated above, but an exellent preamp even with stock tubes. Terrific b...
Best CD player under 5000
I listened to a buch of different players before buying a Cary 303, used, for a very nice price. I'm not going to say that it's the BEST CDp on the market, but I think it's a wonderful player for the money - warm, detailed, harmonically accurate a...
Nordost Red Dawn revII vs SPM
Gregm: I have noticed my mid range is a little bit "riper & richer" sounding these days. Partly I think this is because the SPM, wonderful as it is, was maybe just a tad lean in the lower mids. Another reason could be that I swapped my Arcam A...
Electrocompaniet vs. Resolution Audio
I haven't auditioned the EMC-1, but I would guess it and the Cary are closer in sound to each other than either are to the Resolution cdp. The CD 55 was an excellent player, but I ultimately found it to be a little "cooler" than I preferred. Tonal...
Cary 303 or Van Alstine?
Congratulations, Jay. You're in for a treat. The Marantz was a very nice player in its day, but digital has come a long way in the last couple years. As we said above, be sure to let your 303 break in (90hrs) before critical evaluation. It's a won...
Electrocompaniet vs. Resolution Audio
Audition a Cary CD303, you may like it as well or better than either of the above for less money. I love mine. I compared the 303 directly to a CD 55 and bought the Cary.
Cary 303 or Van Alstine?
Haven't heard the Van Alstine, but I love my Cary 303. I'm really picky about my front end. The Electrocompaniet is a fine player, and so are others, such as models from Metronome. The Cary can be had for less money than the EMC-1, however, and th...
rogue 66 vs vtl 2.5 linestage
VTL makes great tube amps but I've never heard their preamps. I own the Rogue 66 and it's a giant killer. Very nice, warm preamp with good bass. Highly recommended. The 99 is even better, if you can go the extra scratch.
What is a "Redbook" CD player?
A "regular" (or not so regular) CD player. Like the one in my rack and probably yours. The familiar one that we all know and love or hate, that plays the millions of CDs you and I and everyone have been buying and playing for the past several year...
Nordost Red Dawn revII vs SPM
Believe it our not, as much as Red Dawn improved my Spica TC60/B&K system, the improvement wrought by SPM ICs was not subtle, quite obvious in fact. With the Alon V/Cary/Meitner system it was much more dramatic. Personally, I liked Red Dawn mu...
Nordost SPM vs. Quatro Fil
I just went from SPM to Quattro Fil ICs. My dealer told me the QC had as much/more resolution as SPM, was fuller thru mids and had better bass. I've had my ICs in for 2 weeks and he was right. I'm using RCAs.
Eminent vs MLs vs Maggies
I've owned Maggies (1.2s and auditioned the 1.6s, 3.5s), listened quite a bit to a friend's Apogee Divas (phenominal speakers). Maggie can be very seductive. Although I love some things about planars - coherency, speed, musicality, imaging - getti...
Coincident speaker and Interconnects.
I've been very happy so far with my speaker cables. I know someone with ML Ascents and he is very, very pleased with his all Coincident cabling. FYI: They sound pretty good right out of the box but they do take a long, and I mean long, time to bur...
Cary tubes?
My local Cary dealer is also a ProAc dealer. I heard the 805Bs powering 3.8s with the Cary pre and it was MAGIC - on jazz and chamber it sounded like the musicians were in the room. The speakers totally disappeared. The audition room was a bit liv...
