Reviews with all double blind testing?
To the doubters of DBT:Women are fairly recent additions to professional orchestras. For years and years, professional musicians insisted they could hear the difference between male and female performers, and that males sounded better. Women were ...
Why does my laptop annoy me less than my rig?
Thanks everyone for your thoughts. It's nice to know I'm not alone in this, and that if I keep tinkering, I might get over the hump and really enjoy music again, and not just on my laptop. My sanity has never been more in question than of late, as ...
Best Guitar CD Recording
Try Stanley Jordan's 'Jumpin Jack Flash'. Jazz/blues. Amazing. The technique will floor you. He plays a walking bass line, comps chords, and runs all over the place at lighting speed at the same time. Plays with both hands on the fretboard. For st...
Reviews with all double blind testing?
Tgb:All of us hear are interested in one thing: the truth. If DBT is a fundamentally flawed methodology, its results are no guide to the truth about what sounds good. So if the studies are all flawed, and there are audible differences between ampl...
Reviews with all double blind testing?
One more question for Pabelson:Since you've obviously read a lot more DBT stuff than I have, I'm interested to know: what's your system? (Or, what components do you think match up well against really really expensive ones?)
Reviews with all double blind testing?
Pableson:I think we haven't nearly exhausted all of the non-acoustic mechanisms in play, but the ones you mention are certain among them, and probably more relevant than the ones I mentioned. My general point was that the little bit of psychology ...
Reviews with all double blind testing?
Several people here seem to mistake the purpose of DBT. The purpose is not necessarily finding the "best" component, although that may be the case, for instance, in Harman's speaker testing. The point is often simply to see if there is any audible...
Reviews with all double blind testing?
This Rouvin-Pableson exchange is fascinating. I agree with Pableson on just about everything. Perhaps that is because I'm an academic (I'm a philosopher, but I'm also part of the cognitive science faculty b/c of my courses on color and epistemolog...
How much $ to "match" digital in my system?
Thanks, everyone, for your input. I should say, I gave my gf a Musical Fidelity x-150 integrated with a phono stage. I'd put the tt setup in her system (which will be paired with my Paradigms when I get the Revels) and if I like it enough, I'll pu...
Reviews with all double blind testing?
the golden-eared: an anecdotei am a glenn gould fan. according to his biographers, gould could reliably distinguish between playback devices (blind) in the studio, which were indistinguishable to everyone else involved in the studio. gould was spe...
running musical x-150 230 volt amp on 110?
well, damn.
running musical x-150 230 volt amp on 110?
thanks phd.yeah, the tech said it's a matter of switching 3 wires and swapping out the fuse. 'which wires?' i asked. 'just send it in,' was the reply. oh well, $50 + shipping i'm going to try not to think about.
running musical x-150 230 volt amp on 110?
well, i contacted musical fidelity. they suggested i send off the amp to get switched over, internally, and so i did. no harm done in the short term, but the tech there assured me that in the long run, the amp would die, b/c of running hotter.i wo...
Reviews with all double blind testing?
My point was not to call into question the efficacy of blind testing. I am quite in favor of it. Even when only one element of a system is varied, the results are interesting, and valuable. For instance, if I can pairwise distinguish speakers (bli...
Reviews with all double blind testing?
I teach a course on the philosophy of color and color perception. One of the things I do is show color chips that are pairwise indistinguishable. I show a green chip together with another green chip that is indistinguishable. Then, I take away the...
