Power amplifiers with selector Class of operation?
mijostyn beat me to it.  I found the lower bias setting on the JC-1s good for background listening and high bias (25 watts) better for critical listening.  A toggle switch on the back of each chassis so very convenient.
Who Has Technics Headshell with Azimuth Adjustment?
From the Panasonic site photos it appears there is a set screw at the bottom of the barrel.  It may be that headshell removal is necessary to access that screw, which would be a pain.  Those manufacturers that provide a set screw on the side of th...
How much difference will a phono stage upgrade make?
12hz, this is a sideways answer to your interest in the Chinook.I owned a Manley Jumbo Shrimp and Snapper amps for a couple of years.  I was very pleased with the sonics of both but a problem developed with unstable bias in one amp.  I lived in So...
Mono Reissues and the Conical Stylus
Thanks dave.  I suspected that so appreciate the confirmation.
Mono Reissues and the Conical Stylus
For as many years as I've been playing LPs I should know this.  But this thread helped me realize that I don't.Early stereo LPs often contained warnings against playing with a mono cartridge.  Was that due to the larger conical mono stylus tip com...
Mono Reissues and the Conical Stylus
chakster, sorry but spell check wants to change your moniker.  I didn't notice in time to correct it.
Mono Reissues and the Conical Stylus
chaster raises a good point which shows how deep the issue of "mono playback" truly becomes if you're half way serious about it.  The RIAA equalization became effective in 1954, but many labels did not immediately adopt it.  Some, particularly in ...
Mono Reissues and the Conical Stylus
gf, my point in mentioning Carr and Lyra was to suggest even designers/manufacturers don't agree on this subject.Since I'm not an engineer I must rely on simple logic.  And to me it is logical that stereo cutter heads being a different size and sh...
Mono Reissues and the Conical Stylus
Hi gf,I suspect your goal of "a stylus and cartridge that works for both old and new" may not be possible.  At least not if your goal is to "optimize" overall playback. So far as I know, only stereo cutter heads are available now for all reissues, ...
advice for mono cartridge
Lew, I agree not many will bother with more than one mono cartridge, if even that.  But apparently others really get specific in matching stylus tip with the groove.  Just scroll down the options here.  https://www.esotericsound.com/CartStyli.htmA...
advice for mono cartridge
From what I've read, hdm raises a good point about matching stylus size with the vintage of the LP and thus the grooves.  Apparently all the cutter heads are now stereo (no surprise) so even remastered mono LPs will have a narrower groove than the...
Which stylus is correct for a Shellac LP
harrar, at the very least a mono switch may provide quieter playback with mono LPs if you can't afford a separate mono cartridge. The value of this may be argued but not all "mono" cartridges are true mono, some may be strapped internally.  You can...
New home power protection?
Thanks to all who responded.  It is new construction, but also a condo so no exterior antennas or lightening rods.  There are trees nearby taller than the house but I realize that is not a guarantee the house might not be struck.I did order the wh...
About to Buy a Technics SP-10!? Am I making a mistake?
best-groove, I don't speak/read Italian and am not familiar with the Melius site.  I clicked on English at the bottom but nothing changed?
Does anything better Jelco arm ~$1000
chakster and lew, this goes back nearly a year, but I have a question on your counterweight stem discussion.A few years ago I bought a MS-505S.  That has a similar design where the stem is separated by a rubber cushion aft of the pivot point.  Onc...
