Truly Stunning Vinyl Album
Absolutely stunning is what I understand is the first digital recording made available to the general public, the LP Fredrick Fennell conducting the Cleveland Symphonic Winds on Telarc Stereo 5038. Infectious music by Holst, Handel and Bach with t...
Six DAC Comparison
FWIW, assuming that the digital section of a DAC is competently designed, I feel that the topology and parts selection of the analog output stage is more influential on the final sound quality of the DAC.
High end bookshelf speakers for Small room
ronboco:  I’m sure the fat cheeks woofer look is to minimize cabinet diffraction. The SF Maxima produce an engrossing 3 dimensional image while allowing for a broadly generous sweet spot in my experience.
High end bookshelf speakers for Small room
Definitely the Sonus Faber Maxima Amator. Though a floorstander, it is very slim, only a couple inches taller than a bookshelf on stands and takes up less floor space.  You won’t need subs (which will clutter up and may overload the room) with the...
McIntosh MC275 V jumper cables/ wires for parallel use
oldhvymec:  “Yuk” was not my experience at all when running a pair of MC275 Gordon Gow Commemorative edition amps as monos (paralleling the 4 ohm taps) into my Martin-Logan Quest electrostatic loudspeakers for over 20 years.  The Quests dipped to ...
New Cartridge advice
All good cartridge advice, but what piqued my interest was your use of the great Linn Nexus speakers from the 1990’s. When I worked for a Linn dealer during that period, the Linn Nexus were the speakers (along with the Linn Intek integrated and an...
Amp for Vintage Heresy
Long experience with these. In college those Heresy’s really sang (and rocked!) with a Heathkit AA-151 EL84 tube integrated.  In today’s market, a Luxman SQ-N150 integrated would be ideal. EL84 tubes are comparatively cheap by power tube standards...
Do different speaker stands can really make a big sound improvement?
Not sure if Mitch2 was being sarcastic, but he had a definite point when he mentioned that a real audiophile would suspend the speakers from the ceiling with springs. Well, I was a real audiophile when in college in the mid 1970’s and had a girlfr...
Finding a Bookshelf for Luxman C900U/M900U
Owning both the Bowers and Wilkins 805 D3 and 805 D4, I can attest to the excellent synergy they have to Luxman, a L-590 AxII in my case. In my medium-large room both models deliver excellent bass down to low E, which is 41.2 Hz. The front port on...
Small footprint subwoofer
I would heartily recommend the Martin-Logan Dynamo 800X subwoofer. $900 retail currently.  Sub is 13.7”x12.4”x13.1”. Full app control plus a useful ARC DSP app that can use your phone as a microphone. I use a pair of these to extend the response o...
Least expensive plug-in power conditioner that works
My vote is for the Fuhrman AC-215A for your uses.  It is a very simple little box with 2 outlets, a switch, and a 10 amp circuit breaker. It uses Fuhrman’s top line LiFT line noise filtering and also their best SMP spike and surge technology as we...
Looking for a CD / SACD player. Also, tell me about Esoteric
No one mentioned Yamaha?  I have owned my Yamaha CD-S2100 for some six years now and it has operated and sounded flawlessly. I expected it to sound fantastic with SACD but wasn’t prepared for how it reproduced Red Book CD. It may not weigh as much...
Recommend an MC cartridge
I have been selling and installing (and inspecting under a stereoscopic microscope) cartridges since the late 80’s. My experience has shown that Ortofon cartridges are by far the most consistent in manufacturing.  So much so, that, after dialing t...
Sonus Faber Electa Amator III vs. the Bowers and Wilkins 805 D4?
Thanks for all the responses gentlemen!  In the meantime I went to a dealer in Ann Arbor, MI.  They didn’t have the SF Electa Amator III but they did have the SF Maxima Amator floorstander on demo. Same drivers as the EA III, but completely differ...
Beautiful Colored Tube Preamp ($10k budget) to Pair w/ Very Accurate Monitors (PSI A25M)
My vote would be for the Luxman CL-38uC. Complete with basic remote (volume and mute), full MM/MC phono pre with step-up transformers on the MC input, bass and treble controls with selectable turnover frequencies, a tape loop, and balanced inputs ...
