Likely culprit for harshness at higher volumes?
re: Kind of Blue -- Yeah, it's the recording. I have it too. Same issue. My buddy has it in SACD. Next time he comes by, I'll remind him to bring it with him again so we can re-compare.
How good is Emotiva 2 channel gear??
Nordic: I received a very quick response from the Sales Department. It was regarding the crossover section of the USP-1, incidentally. Identify yourself as a prospective buyer with follow-up questions to the available literature. I know it's a tec...
Album which you have listened to most?
Kbarkamian, going to my friend's house after school in junior high to play Frogger on the Commodore 64 while listening to "Ride the Lightning" quickly went from routine to tradition. The album is hardly ever mentioned, it seems, and "Fade to Black...
Why do intelligent people deny audio differences?
This method of testing has flummoxed me enough to conclude the same: the test just doesn't do it for me. Discerning differences hasn't been so difficult in my admittedly sparse critical listening experience. The question of which has been superior...
Reel to Reel decks
I took the Akai beast to Fred at Classic Audio Repair in San Diego. He confirmed what several have said (parts, etc.). He recommended I ditch it and get Teac, unless I wanted to make it a personal project. I may Craigslist for a low amount as "par...
difference between an active and a passive preamp?
Since this thread has in part become a "passive and buffered pre roundup," I thought I'd throw the Superphon SP100 into the mix. It may be older, but it seems to have some kind of following. Plus, there're currently two available in the Classified...
Why is 2 Channel better than multi-channel?
I'm not a fan of surround, although I think it can be pretty great. Discussions pitting the merits and flaws of each against the other often distills into the "authentic experience" debate. Macrojack hit the nail on the head: it's all self-decepti...
Reel to Reel decks
Well, it works. A local record shop had a box of free reel tapes (home recorded). Turns out, many of them were actually sealed blank tapes. Nice windfall. I'm looking forward to checking this guy's Ink Spots recording against my cd. Unfortunately,...
"Best" DAC for a grand or less
The Music Hall may be a great choice, but Stereo Designs in San Diego also carries the Rega DAC and the Ayre Acoustics QB-9 (which I bought!).Whoops! My mistake. I meant Stereo Unlimited. I like the guys at Stereo Design. I got my Rotel cd changer...
difference between an active and a passive preamp?
If you look at the designs of a Pass B-1, Burson-160, and Horn Shoppe Truth as examples, these buffered devices are anything but band-aids.I think we're using the term differently. I didn't intend a pejorative. I meant it the other way: something ...
"Best" DAC for a grand or less
I wandered into a couple hi-fi shops in my area (San Diego). One of them, Stereo Design, is almost completely analog. Vandersteen and Electrocompaniet equipment dominates their space. The Music Hall DAC is the only DAC they carry. Their claim is t...
difference between an active and a passive preamp?
I have to admit that the common detractors' rant of diminished dynamics rings true for me. For what I put into my system, however, I consider it an acceptable trade-off (for now). Plus, my system isn't perfectly optimized for a passive preamp, lik...
Reel to Reel decks
That's pretty much where I'm at with it, Marchameslice. I'll post my results on this thread when I get to the project, since this thread is truly one of the few sources for kind of info. Many thanks again.Michael
Reel to Reel decks
Thanks for the tip. I typically use Pro-Shot 1 Step Gun Cleaner and Lubricant as a general household oil-based lubricant. Any reason I should use something else?
Reel to Reel decks
Thanks for the responses, guys. I'll be chewing my lip for awhile on this one. I don't have anything to test it with yet. I guess that's step two. We'll see how it goes.
