What's the best preamp for under 1000 I'd add the Audio Research SP-9 to the list if a phono stage is needed. All versions can be had for less than $1000, I would go for the latest MK III which is the best sounding but a little harder to find (there was one listed recently in the $800...
Small Room Question There was a related thread last week, check this out: "http://forum.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/fr.pl?ymisc&1058899409&read&keyw&zzdiagonal" I intend on trying this out in the future since I too have a small room with questionable acoustics.
Headphone I can stand for more than 1 hour I agree with Sidssp, the 580 and 600 are very comfortable. For me they were the most confortable and best sounding of any traditional headphone I tried. Problem was I needed isolation (580 and 600 are open-air type) so I went with the Etymotic ER-...
Why Veneer? Particle board and Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) have better and more controlled (i.e., consistent) damping than regular wood and are a whole lot cheaper, especially in the larger thicknesses common in high end speakers. It's also much easier to...
Tube newbie, Audio Research questions? As with all things audio there are people who love Audio Research and there are those who don't. In an overall sense it is good stuff. Very well made, service is readily available for the occasional tune up or update, and it holds it's value well....
Tell the Truth I suggest we start with making Audiogon perfect then turn our attention to the real world!
How many quality interconnects to I need ? In a general sense you want the better interconnects from the source to the pre-amp, the next best from the pre-amp to the amp. With respect to the cost, there isn't a catch-all answer, but for a system such as yours there's no sense in spending m...
Jethro Tull "Aqualung" Shoot out results Interesting results, the common thinking is UK pressings are better, you proved that wrong! What may also be at work here (and especially so with DSOM) is an early pressing versus a later pressing. I don't think there will be much argument that ea...
HE expo in SF this past week end...what was hot I was most impressed by the Cabasse Kara's driven by the Butler mono blocks. I've never heard the Kara's or any other Cabasse speakers before but I think some of the wonderful sound had to attributed to the Butler's. They are (to me) a most unusua...
CD and/or LP collections. Is it about the music? I have about 1100 CD's and 2500 LP's. Based on market value they have to be worth far more than my system. When it comes to being "about the music" the more appropriate question might be, when you listen to any one of those CD's/LP's how often do ...
Soundstaging and imaging are audiophile fictions. One thing that hasn't been clearly stated is that for an acoustic performance (e.g., orchestral) the microphones are usually placed closer to the performers than the vast majority of the audience. By being closer to the microphones the relative di...
What to use for shorting pins on balanced amp? If you have the owners manual it should give you some guidance on which pins to short (there are three). The short loop of wire suggested by Royy should work OK, at least for a temporary solution. Just make sure you short the correct two wires. Wh...
Michael Hedges All of his recordings are wonderful from a musical standpoint and very good to excellent from a recording standpoint! My favorite, from a musical standpoint, is Aerial Boundries, though it does have some reverb added that will annoy the purist. Or...
Advise Needed, Best speakers for approx $15,000 If you really are going to spend $15,000 then the price of getting to a large city where you can hear many of these speakers is mandatory. Some dealers may even cover some of your expense if you do buy from them. DO NOT spend this much money based...
What good FM stations-jazz/alternative in Detroit WEMU at 89.1 in Ypsilanti is predominately Jazz, depends on your location if you can pick up in the Detroit area. CBC radio 89.9 while predominately classical has some interesting music on weekend evenings. Glad you found WDET, that is my favorite! |
