Would adding a Dac improve the sound for my setup?
The Wyred 4 Sound DAC-1 would be worth considering and is in your price range. I believe it would be a step up for you.
Cable + Onkyo + HDMI = periodic audio drop outs
Blindjim, I feel your frustration. I have an Onkyo TX-SR605 and I once had a problem like you described using the Motorola DCX3400 cable box from Comcast except that it would only affect the video and only on the Comcast 3D channel where it would ...
Albums on Bluray ???
Well, if the recordings were made in one of the new high-res formats like DTS HD Master Audio format you won't get it through the PS DAC3. If your Blu-ray player is a good one you can hook up either the analog multi-channel or stereo outputs direc...
Why do subs sound bloated or slow?
Duke, you make a great point. The room acoustics play a huge part in getting good bass and unfortunately the majority of rooms were not designed with any thought to good sound reproduction. Many rooms are just plain horrible for proper bass reprod...
Why do subs sound bloated or slow?
Bifwynne, thanks for your insights... at last someone gets what I was saying. I have one sub set up in a two-channel system with Magnepans and it works quite well and another in my Home Theater (previously mentioned). They both integrate very well ...
Why do subs sound bloated or slow?
Well, the sub in my Home Theater sounds great for both music and movies and it aligns with the main full-range speakers seamlessly... and it's cheap! It's just set up really well (no EQ either -- digital or otherwise). So it can definitely be done...
Why do subs sound bloated or slow?
Bryon, I think you're on the right track but those two parameters you mentioned don't have to me mutually exclusive. You can get the crossover point right either by ear or by measurement. Setting the time alignment (minimizing phase error) is proba...
Review: Tube Audio Design Hibachi Monoblocks TAD 125 Amplifier
Hi Jaymark,I found the W4S ST-250 to be very dynamic in my system (as dynamic as any amps I've tried). I think you may be reacting to a couple of different factors. One aspect is that the Hibachis may have a bit of extra warmth or plump in the mid...
Review: Tube Audio Design Hibachi Monoblocks TAD 125 Amplifier
Hey Jaymark,Nice review. I love to find budget gear that gives high bang-for-the-buck like that. But you have to remember that your Ear tube linestage is also coloring the sound a bit, reducing ultimate detail and probably making the Hibachi's sou...
J River Vs. Media Monkey Do they sound different
Yes, actually I made this comparison in the last week and I'm convinced the J. River is audibly superior to Media Monkey. I've deleted Media Monkey and I'm now using J. River Jukebox 14 (the free one). For me the J. River was a bit more difficult t...
1970's receivers and integrated amps...
Bob... I could care less about what Harry Pearson says or thinks. I do know I'm getting very good sound out of that Pioneer -- maybe not Shindo good, but still quite respectable. I'd put that system with the cheap Pioneer and VMPS up against your ...
1970's receivers and integrated amps...
I have a early 70's vintage Pioneer SX-939 receiver that I bought recently on Craigs List. I have it hooked up to a big pair of VMPS RM2 ribbon hybrid speakers and it sounds quite impressive. The transients are fast and clean, the midrange is swee...
Help to store hi-rez on external hard drive.
Marqmike, I believe I saved all the Chesky files in the FLAC format via MediaMonkey (which was recommended to me by Chesky) and when I play them on the W4S DAC-2 it displays the incoming resolution (usually as 24-bit/96k).As Larryken suggested, it...
Help to store hi-rez on external hard drive.
You would probably need things like an operating system, keyboard, and monitor to accomplish that. I recently picked up a used IBM ThinkPad laptop to use as a music server for the USB DAC in my main system. It can play any files from its own hard ...
What I learned on Audiogon This Year
Macdadtexas, I like your observations and I'm sure more will be added to the list.Regarding point number 10, you might want to try a Wyred 4 Sound DAC-2. It may challenge your analog rig and give you something else to ponder. At least that's been ...
