kt88 vs. 6550 noobie question
In my Cayin A88T I found the SED KT88s to have a somewhat loose, lively, and dynamic more accurate but non-clinical sound. Great bass, good midrange substance, and extended true to life highs with a strong 'front row center' dynamic. In comparison...
Best Amplifier Speaker DAC Cayin Spendor Monarchy
By the way, I had some Merlin speakers which I put head to head with the Onix REF I from AV123. Both are sweet and extended type speakers. Although the Merlin was smoother, I actually preferred the slightly brassier REF I Speakers. They were clear...
Rel vs. MJ Acoustics vs. Sunfire
I had a Sunfire, and it doesn't belong in the same group and MJ Acoustics and REL. The Sunfire is of the compact home theater genre of dinasaur stomping room shaking subwoofers, whereas the MJ Acousics and REL are of the few subwoofers truely disi...
Match subwoofer to Spendor S3/5?
MJ accoustics blend wonderfully and are musical. They have simlar sound to the REL subs, made in England, compact, and cost less. There is a pair currently on Audiogon new for $700. Great buy. Ultra musical. Should be perfect for the 3/5 spendor.
Cayin A-88t vs. Almarro A318B
By the way, the Cayin A-88T has dramatically more power than the Almarro 318B. Whoever said it is only marginally more powerful must have been speaking in a highly hypothetical way and not have actually listened and compared the two. In addition t...

One last note of mixing components for sound and some good tubes: Earlier I mentioned I thought the Bel Canto Dac sounded a little dull. In keeping with the theme of the post, I should mention that I thought it was dull in line with my already lus...

One other note on listening to an Almarro 318B single ended triode amp: It had wonderful palpable midrange, but my reasonably efficient Spendor S8e floorstanding speakers could not be driven well by it. I couldn't turn the music up beyond low to l...

Subwoofers: I forgot to include a note on my experience with subwoofers in my recent review. I tried several. A Velodyne HGS, Martin Logan Dynamo, AV123/Onix Rocket, and a 10" MJ Acoustics Ref III. I wanted the sub primarily for music as I thought...
Cayin A-88t vs. Almarro A318B
I have heard both and had the Cayin at the same time as the Almarro. I love my lush sounding and plenty powerful Cayin. In comparison, the Almarro has wonderful slightly superior midrange, will require very efficient speakers if you like to turn t...
Cayin A88T break in and biasing??
There are some, and apparently you are one as was I, that think the stock tubes in the Cayin make it sound a bit hard and brittle. I have listened to numerous amps, and the Cayin A88T however, is not in the hard and brittle catagory at all in my o...
Joule electra Pre Amp -tube rolling
While it doesn't hurt to know what tubes a manufacturer chooses or what is recommended in equipment, ultimately, the user is trying to achieve a certain sound. So, saying which tube might sound better with which numbered tube is worthless unless a...
The best CD Player for the money
Audio Research DAC 1. Far better than Rega. One of the very best ever. The DAC1 is very revealing and detailed without the slightly unatural sounding, brighter tone of the Regas. Instruments with the DAC1 sound as they should and just float about ...
Spendor S8e, Dynaudio Focus 220, VA Grand Mozart
A little note to add to my input: After much comparison I have found I prefer the sound of the Focus 220s to the Focus 140s. They bring out more detail without sounding harsh and a direct comparison showed me that they have more weight in the lowe...
Von Schweikert VR1 vs Dynaudio Focus 110
I think what people are looking for is a genuine comparison of tonality and preference based on that between the two. I didn't like one without saying why doesn't really say anything at all.
Dynaudio Focus 220's vs. T2.5's
I have a pair of Focus 220s and had some T2.5s prior to them but not at the same time. However, I did compare some Focus 140s to the T2.5 and preferred the sound of the 140 over them. I like the added bass that the Focus 220 has to offer. By memor...
