Johnny Griffin on fire at the Village Vanguard! Around 1 minute in Grif plays a blistering solo that sounds like 16 notes per second!!

Happy New Year! @acman3 Great "Lockjaw" selections. I like that live rendition of I'll Remember April a lot. Really swings. And Lock and Johnny Griffin always sound great in all of their "tenor battle" recordings. Them 2 went together like peanut...

And here is a favorite tenor of mine who's tone always sounds "edgy" or "gruff" but I really like a lot of Willis Jackson's recording sessions especially all of the sessions with a very young Pat Martino on the guitar. Pat's solo starts at 4:40 an...

@wharfy  That Viscounts rendition of Harlem Nocturn is new to me. Definitely a "gritty tone" on the sax. This is my "go to" rendition of the same tune. But then again I am mesmerized by almost anything Illinois Jacquet blows and the brief but mes...

@wharfy  I am big fan of Joey DeFrancesco as are a few others here. I believe there was a discussion about JD a few months ago. I never got a chance to see JD before he passed on last year and this is a regret. I have a copy of that Christian M...

In 1994, Hammond B3 master, The late Dr. Lonnie Smith, of whom I had the privilege of seeing live 10 plus times before he passed on 2 years ago, released 2 albums in 1994 comprised of studio improvisations on popular Jimi Hendrix songs. The album...

@stuartk Thanks for posting Joanne Brackeen. I have to admit, I had never heard of her. JFA is my "guide to jazz" Found this and listened to the entire album. Brackeen is a great pianist, and, as @acman3 said, when you add great backing personnel,...

Thanks @alexatpos for the Roy Ayers clip. Great vibes player and its too bad he went over to the "dark side" for good by the late 60s but the path he took was his chosen one and he was very successful.

@mahgister  I’m Listening to Jackie McLean right now. The album is "Jackies Bag" and Blue Mitchell has some very tasty trumpet solos on the song list. (tracks 4 - 9 as Donald Byrd, another great trumpet player, plays on tracks 1 - 3)Here is a cou...

@curiousjim  I’ve never thought about making a list of favorite trumpet players, but if I did, Blue Mitchell would definitely be on that list. If I made a list of my favorite trumpet players, Blue Mitchell would be on my list as well.

@ho249 I agree with Curious Jim. Etudes is a great album. Here is another by the same trio that is on my desert island list.

@alexatpos Those are great Victor Felman sessions. Thanks for posting. Drummer Stan Levy and bassist Scott LaFaro need no introduction. LaFaro went on to play bass in the Bill Evans Trio (the great Evans-LaFaro-Motian trio). Stan Levy is a great...

@curiousjim I rally like that acoustic guitar rendition of Take Five. Very tasty! And I am happy you like Blue Mitchell's Blue Soul album.  Mitchell recorded 6 albums for Riverside between 1959 and 1962 before switching over to Blue Note in 1963...

@curiousjim  Just got 4 Blue Michell albums, so I know what I’ll be listening to this afternoon. Blue Soul by Blue Mitchell is on my desert island list. I hope that's one of the 4.
