Interim SS Amp - Likely Candidates?
Been on the road, so late to the party.  Seems like a great opportunity to check out class D.  The Orchard amps you listed look intriguing.  If you go that route, please let us know how they compare to the F8!
Your last concert was to see who and when?
By the way, I posted some links under the way-too-unimaginative discussion name of “livestream concerts”, providing digital membership info for the San Francisco Opera and a couple major jazz venues.  If you have any go-to sites for streaming live...
livestream concerts
@larsman  Not a problem!  I didn't mean to exclude on demand material, just a poor choice of title for the "Discussion". I can't say enough good things about Moonalice.  They play every year at the Petaluma Music Festival benefit (Keeping Music ...
I think I have an amp problem
zlone +1 If it's really input-specific and occurring on more than 1 source, start with the source control knob.  Cables are less likely to be the issue, for the same reason, but it's possible that multiple sets are failing. If that doesn't solve...
Has anyone switched from Class AB/A to Class D? Was it better? Was it worse?
There are a few differences: 1. I don't think we really know how long class D amps will last, how they will most likely fail, or whether they can be maintained in the same sense as a conventional amp.  They could last longer. 2. Class D amps use...
Guitar lacking bite, vocal lacking presence
@andy2  "I also built some of  my speakers" - are these "modified" Thiel CS2.4s?
Matching a amplifier to speakers
Dynaudio is a fine manufacturer - now that you've chosen your speakers, it's time to hear them with some different amps!  I think they have a pretty consistent "house" sound, so hearing any Dynaudios with an amp should give you a good idea of the ...
Why I don't hear bass drums on Jazz LPs?
@bdp24  Not sure how I stumbled across this long nascent thread, but I enjoyed reading your contributions.  Since I know we share a common obsession, I wanted to add one thing.  I believe this is from Levon - he said that Richard Manuel played rh...
There is no substitute for cubic inch or in this case surface area
Most modern box speakers use reflex loading to handle the bass region.  The most obvious "violent" cone movement occurs at the port tuning frequency, where the box acoustically vanishes and the woofer is completely unloaded.
"audiophiles listen to their equipment"
3 friends listening to the stereo together: musician: I like the trumpet player's last cadenza - a touch of Louie, there audiophile: I found the bass a bit thin engineer-type: Sorry, I wasn't listening.  Busy playing with my slide rule...
Considering switching to XLR cables,
I'm assuming the ARC & Pass are both fully balanced circuits. If you live in the middle of Manhattan with 100 different wifi networks within a stones throw of your audio system, XLR should definitely be both quieter noise-wise and louder sign...
Do sound characteristics matter when moving from midfi to hifi?
1. I see the separation between mid-fi and high end as being more about philosophy & voicing than price.  Companies like Schiit & First Watt make cosmetic & economic compromises to produce gear with more than a whiff of high end perfor...
Technics 1200G vs VPI Forever Model One
@atmasphere , would you please share the name of your platter pad with us?
The best opening act you've ever seen & heard?
Jesse Colin Young lived around here for over 20 years, moving to Hawaii after losing his house & studio in the Mount Vision Fire of 1995.  I saw him do several solo sets in the 80s & 90s.  This particular time, he opened for the Rowan Brot...
