? about Smoking Power Amp
Did you pull the cover(s) off it and take a look inside it? A visual inspection might be a good idea. If there are seriously burned “bits”, you will see them :)
After a long, long sleep: ML-335
Yeah, I would power it up with some care. At a minimum, make a dim bulb tester. But a Variac is the way to go. Capacitors that have been sitting so long, may not like the surge of power that the transformer will be dumping into them. Would really ...
Can anyone explain what a power tube does inside an amplifier, eg kt88.
@mlsstl    Agree, it is making a bigger copy of the small signal. The small signal is just making it possible for a separate bigger signal to flow. Two signals. The small one is controlling the big one, it’s not that the small one is being magni...
Can anyone explain what a power tube does inside an amplifier, eg kt88.
Simple answer, tubes are valves. Small signal opens the valve and lets the power from your power supply go to your speakers. They are called valves for a reason. Do a youtube search. Watch some videos if you actually care to know. Lots of info ou...

What is turntable “liveliness”.
@ossicle2brain  I think there are a lot of people who believe as you do that a TT has no sound and that it’s just a spinning platter.   Here’s the thing. A TT is a combination of a plinth, a motor/drive system, a bearing, a platter and may or m...
Will China become the poor man’s dealer for high end audio?
Hmmm. Let’s see.  A high speed train out of Beijing, or an Amtrack out of Washington… Sorry, we’re we discussing technology?
"Can You Lift Yours?"
Just took possession of a Krell KSA-200. 125lbs. It’s not working, so in an effort to not have to keep lifting it up on a work bench, and taking it down, I’m going to build a table for it where it can stay until I get it working. My TT is about 90...
Xangsane XS-1001Ag silver coax SPDIF cable
I recently ordered and received a Xangsane phono cable from AliXpress, Ordered it because I was hoping the shielding protocol used looked “proper” and wanted to see if it would help reduce hiss/hum from my vinyl playback. Yup, it did! Noise all b...
Why do speakers improve with more powerful amps?
@emergingsoul  Yeah, quite surprised myself! I have also driven them with great success using a single ended solid state VFet amp (Pass DIY) which is rated between 8 and 10 watts.    For fun, I got one of the Fosi V3 amps. It, is rated at 300w i...
Why do speakers improve with more powerful amps?
Power supply Power supply Power supply Bigger amps have bigger power supplies. The signal that gets sent to the speakers, is fed directly from the power supply. Bigger power supply, more dynamic headroom.    My 30w class A amp, with a massive ...
The new Linn LP12 50th Anniversary edition
Linn has been working to improve on a design they ripped off the Ariston RD11 for decades now.
Heresy IV vs Zu DW6/Soul mk2
A speaker that has peaked my curiosity is the Heretic line out of Montreal. High sensitivity. The Big coax, big box, series crossover. All those combined, should make for a dynamic presentation with a soundstage to match.   I own Cornwalls, and ...
