Electronics for Harbeth, Especially Monitor 40 series
@Vinnie,In an interview accompanying his recent TAS review, Paul Seydor says that he is always found Harbeths to be "notably coherent" and Alan Shaw replies that coherence is primarily a crossover issue. It doesn’t take much of a mismatch in level...

Thanks Vinnie! Very interesting. I never thought a three-way could sound good at 24 inches - that's really close. Nor did I think that the 40s could get by with only 35 watts.
Electronics for Harbeth, Especially Monitor 40 series
@dan31, Vinnie Rossi told me at Newport that he listens to all Harbeths in the same near field type set up. Six-foot equilateral triangle. I've never heard them set up that way, but anything that would keep the tonality and frequency distribution ...
Electronics for Harbeth, Especially Monitor 40 series
I never thought about at atma-sphere but it makes sense now that Ralph brings it up. They are fast and clean. If the speakers are impedance friendly and that's the sound you want, they are fine amplifiers in my experience.

Maybe it's no coincidence. Perhaps a pair of Job mono amps would be the poor man's equivalent. Harbeth dealers generally seem to pair them with British integrated amps, and I know that Vinny Rossi shows with Harbeth, but those both sound very diff...
Best Speakers for Nearfield Listening $4k or Less?
How about a pair of used Harbeth M30 or 30.1? I believe the newer model uses the same tweeter and the mid/woofer is very similar to the M40's mid driver. Doesn't the M40 provide way too much bass for a small room, making the sound muddy. Bobby P h...
When a Reviewer "likes" something
I agree that readers must take what they read with a grain of salt but it's also important to have realistic expectations. What did you expect from a review? Audio reviews aren't that much different than those for cars, movies or food. I can't tel...
The Worst Speaker you have ever heard.
I heard them at different times at shows and they were simply awful. Not saying they are bad products, just that they weren't doing themselves any favors. The Statements were played so loud and were so bass heavy in the room that I started to feel...
Venture Audio Speakers
The best system I have ever heard used Venture Audio speakers at Precision Audio. Orchestral music sounded more like it does at Disney Hall that I have ever heard from the two channel stereo - effortless, clear and the best sound staging I have ev...

02-18-11: Bobbyapalkovicglory, we are near the end of development of the vsm project. after sixteen years and six new versions of it i have gone through the whole thing numerous times. Bobby, does this mean you are going to come out with an entire...
British sound???
The "British sound" is also characterized by a small dip in the presence region (2-4K hertz) which will have the effect of emphasizing the midrange and making things less "edgy".
Nice Tube Preamp for Boulder 1060
My apologies if I am hijacking this thread, but a February 11 response from Ralph caught my attention. He claims that his balanced implementation renders differences in cables irrelevant. Has anyone ever tested this claim. Easy to do… Change the c...
Can the Harbeth 40.1's boggie ?????
No, Harbeth monitor 40.1s cannot boogie. Read Bob Neill's comments about them. He got tired of them and moved on because they never could lose their stiff upper lip.
Is there a great LP12 set-up person in SoCal?
Second Stan at Shelley's. I forgot about him.
Is there a great LP12 set-up person in SoCal?
Brooks is great with turntables and has always supported vinyl, but he has never been a Linn dealer - he was an Oracle dealer when the Delphi and the LP 12 were going head-to-head (shows you how long I've been around). Randy has been an on-again, ...
