Perhaps we should stick with midfi...
Azaud:Your comments underscores one of my criticisms of the way that many audiophiles approach equipment purchases. Expressions like "synergy" and "trust your ears" are so mushy and ill-defined, that it makes the whole thing seem like systems come...
Perhaps we should stick with midfi...
Another problem with high end audio is that there is a lot of snake oil being sold. A further problem is that many of the "audiophile" reviewers who post glowing reviews of equipment have conflicts of interest that they don't reveal in their revie...
Perhaps we should stick with midfi...
There may be some trolling in the original post (in fact, it reads as though the original poster didn't actually spend 60 grand) but the underlying point is not a bad one. You can get a good setup with, say, Rotel components, and be probably 90% t...
I'll never listen to another record...
I can't speak to how well you have cared for your records, but it is not required that you clean every record merely due to the fact of its age. I've got records from the 1970's and 1980's that sound fine without cleaning. On the other hand, there...
What is the Phono stage you have finished with?
If I understand the comments by Rauliruegas, and repeated by Notec and Atmasphere, the theory is that a phono stage that is integrated into the preamplifier is better than one that is separate because the interconnection forms a kind of "weak link...
Whest ps.30r
Dcarol:I would say that it would be very useful if you would revisit your comments in a few months. Right now, there seems to be a lot of emotion in your comments (which is understandable with the excitement of a new component). But in a few month...
Whest ps.30r
I think that the James' statement is true; any time you go through a switch, *some* amount of noise is likely to be introduced. My suspicion is that the actual amount of noise is rather small. As I recall reading in your blog thread, someone recom...
Whest ps.30r
On the difference between the PS.30RDT and the PS.30RDT SE, my hypothesis is this (and it is just a guess): the PS.30RDT SE uses an opamp where the PS.30RDT SE uses a discrete bipolar module. So my guess is that the PS.30RDT uses negative feedback...
Whest ps.30r
CrystalrefWith regard to my earlier question about the gain levels produced by the Whest PS.30RDT SE, I found the answer by looking at the photos that you posted on the Internet. In the PS.30RDT SE, the gain and resistance load levels are printed ...
Whest ps.30r
To Crystalref:Could you provide some insights into how the operation of the PS.30RDT SE differs from that of the PS.30RDT? The statements on the Whest website don't really help me understand what is different about the operation of the PS.30rdt se...
Vinyl Front End Upgrade
If you're using a cartridge that produces 1mv output, 65dB of gain sounds to me to be about 10dB too high. At 65dB I would imagine that you aren't able to turn the volume very high on your pre-amp. I have a Bryston BP-20 preamplifier, which has an...
Amazon reference vs Vpi Hrx
I can't comment on the VPI but I recently bought an Amazon Referenz from Sorasound and can give you my comments on the unit (I can highly recommend Sorasound as a reputable merchant).I really like the Referenz setup. I refer to it as a Referenz se...
Whest ps.30r
I have to say that I am highly skeptical of these claims that using a MAC HC power cord makes a "huge difference" in the performance of a Whest phono stage. I have a Whest PS.30RDT. Folks, this is a 20W appliance. I find it hard to believe that re...
What is the Phono stage you have finished with?
The casework for the Whest PS.30RDT SE is in black but the standard casework for the PS.30RDT is silver. You can get Whest to provide a PS.30RDT in black for an extra charge (which is what I did). The cheesy photos of the PS.30RDT SE on the Whest ...
What is the Phono stage you have finished with?
I have dealt with Whest Audio personally, and I can say that they not only make fine phono stage products, but they are a fine company to deal with. Their customer service is very good. I have a Whest PS30RDT and I would describe it as having a "s...
