The first-best-last analog item you ever bought
1979 Linn LP12, and modern :) 1983 Fidelity FR64fx and ARC SP-8 (recently refurbished by ARC). Undoubtedly there are better modern equivalents, but these all still sound very good. Of course I do plan on upgrading some day...
Minimum Cart Output for 30db Gain Phonostage
There is an article on the Absolute Sound website which gives the formula for required gain as NdB = 20 Log V1/V2, where NdB is the required gain, V1 is the voltage needed to drive your earphones, and V2 is the output voltage of the cartridge. You...
Do you power your Class D amp on and off?
My ARC 150.2 stays on 24/7, unless I'm away on vacation. ARC recommends leaving the amp on, and various reviewers have commented that sound quality improves up to the point where the amp has been on continuously for several days.
Novice here with questions
I would throw in some caution about the Magnepan recommendations. I've had Maggies for a very long time (MGIIAs, now 1.6s) and they do want power. I use an ARC 150.2 which is rated at 150 watts/channel into 8 ohms, doubled down to 300 watts/channe...
Linn Upgrade?
Stanwal: Thanks for your recommendation - mat & belt ordered! I looked at the threads on HIFICRITIC, and I'll be curious to hear about your experiences with your "new" Linn. I'm still tempted by the Hercules/MOSE, but will wait for the mat &am...
Cartridge Output
First, there is a nice writeup on calculating required gain on The Absolute Sound website, http://www.avguide.com/blog/taking-the-guesswork-out-phonostage-gain. If you plug your values into the formula (works nicely in Excel) you will see how much...
Audio Research Sp-6a-Should it be modified?
I had similar questions with my ARC SP-8. In the end I sent it back to ARC to be refurbished, rather than to another specialist to have it modified/changed. My logic was that while an upgraded SP-8 might be an improvement, it simply wasn't going t...
Using different cables for Bi-Wiring
Here's a link to Vandersteen's views on biwiring, which I first found in another thread on this forum: http://www.vandersteen.com/pages/Answr7.htm. He recommends using the same wire for both runs, and using separate cables versus two within a sing...
Can you Analyze this?
I can't stay away from this thread, since my two largest lists of "favorite URLs" are cycling (lots of years as an amateur racer) and audio (about as many years listening to music). One can get a bicycle for $200 (Walmart), $3K (lots of very good ...
Audio Research 150.2 problem?
A response only "tangentially" related to your question: the 150.2 sounds better if you just leave it on all the time, rather than turning it on and off; since it draws 40 watts at idle, there isn't much penalty to leaving it on 24/7. This was rec...
Would a ARC ph5 have enough gain for a Lyra Titan
I don't see a problem. There is a nifty formula from TAS which says that the needed gain = 20Log(V1/V2) where V1 is the voltage needed to drive the amp to a reasonable level (typically somewhere around 1.0 volts) and V2 is the cartridge output, in...
David Bromberg -- Any fans?
Another Bromberg fan, recently bought 3 of his older LPs on eBay. "My Own House" [Fantasy Records] is one of the rare pressings that really sounds like he is in the room with me, wonderful ambience. Going back to the 70s-80s, I had a good friend w...
Are you delighted at your present system?
Actually, yes. In fact, it worries me, since most threads imply that I should be constantly trying to improve my rather "low-to-middle of the cost spectrum" system. But the truth is that I listen to it for hours at a time, and regret turning it of...
If you play your music between 10 and 12 on the d
If you have a stepped attenuator, you get better discrimination of levels if your "normal" listening level is around "noon", since each step is a smaller percentage of your volume than if the attenuator is just one or two notches up from its lowes...
What is the best power cable under $200.00 retail?
How about one that I haven't seen mentioned here on Audiogon? There is a DIY cord commonly called the "Audio Asylum PC" which is well-regarded on the AA forum, using Belden 19364 14-gauge wire and high-quality plugs. RAM Electronics sells the equi...
