Couple of questions on the Merlin VSM speakers...
I have the VSM's, and mostly listen to 'rock' (although I prefer to call it virtuoso guitar music, which could range from jazz to classical to bluegrass to funk to screaming heavy metal). I have a large room, sit about 8-9 feet away from the speak...
Your Favorite, Most Outstanding Guitar Solo
Hard to pick one or two, but if I HAD to, I would say Bill Nelson, 'Adventures in a Yorkshire Landscape', from the Live in the Air Age LP, and Steve Vai, 'Whispering a Prayer', from live in an Ultraworld CD.
Anybody Heard the Vandersteen 5A'S
dkuriloff, I don't know if Verona qualifies as northern NJ, but Audio Connections in Verona had a pair of 5A's on display at the beginning of the summer, in a room with Audio REsearch, Cary, and Rogue.
Electrocompaniet Bass prowess
I am using the EMC in my system. It does not have the absolute latest upgrade; however, my system has more than enough bass for me, given the limitations of my speakers (Merlin Milleniums w/BAM, cut off at 28hz). So, I can't speak for the absolute...
Is the Berning ZH270 revalatory?
Hi Mew. I've had the 270 for almost two years now, (actually I have two running as monoblocks). I also have had/heard other traditional OTL's of roughly equal nominal power output, well-regarded (for the time) traditional tube amps, and higher-pow...
Shawn Lane R.I.P.
That's way too bad. He wasn't just an incredible guitar player, he played EVERYTHING on Powers of Ten. Any idea what happened?
Personal Preamp Evolution
Belles (forget the model number, don't have it anymore), Transcendent GG, ARC LS-15, David Berning microzotl modified to act as a preamp, Eastern Electric Minimax, and (hopefully very soon) Tron COmet. Still have the Transcendent, Berning and Mini...
Berning and Supratek
I don't have the supratek with my Merlin/Bernings, but I know at least one guy (tubegroover) who does, and he loves it. I'm sure he'll chime in here soon for more detail.
Vandy 3A Sig owners question
I havent used them myself, but know someone who has used 3A sigs with Atma-sphere MA-1's. He also has the 2wq sub, so while I have never heard him complain of a shortfall of bass, I don't want to mislead. Frankly, I wouldn't expect too much of a p...
Problems with my Berning ZH270
George, I have (almost) the identical system to yours--EMC I CD, Merlins', and Berning 270's, although I have two running as monoblocks. I tried Quattro FIl IC's--no go, too bright, IMO. Haven't tried SPM's, although some would say there is a Nord...
I need more Funk
I can't speak for the recording quality, but any Jeff Beck from that period--Wired, Live with Jan Hammer--should do it. Also, I don't know if this would qualify as 'funk' or 'funky jazz', but John Scofield 'Uberjam' is pretty funky, and is a very ...
When did it all start?
As early as I can remember. My dad always had high-end, built his own kits, transmission lines, single driver speakers, etc. I grew up with music and audio, and it was pretty high-end for the time; at one point in the mid-70's, when I was a teenag...
Tube Rolling on PSE HL1 hybrid line stage preamp
Hey Richfield hunter, this is off topic, but you don't mean Richfield PA, do you? Right next to Mount pleasant Mills, McCalisterville, Cocolamus, and of course the city of Evendale?
OTL amplifiers
I have Transcendent 80 watt monoblock OTL's and Berning OTL's (according to some). I know someone who has Atma-sphere M-60's and someone else who has the MA-1's, as well as other Berning owners and people who have extensive experience with Joule O...
Why no mention of "Stereovox" cables??
