Help me find a pre-amp
@OP. I am also looking for a new preamp.  My power amp is a BHK250. I have a PS Audio BHK preamp and I just finished home auditioning an LTA microZOTL preamp.  I prefer the microZOTL - it has a more delicate, but full smooth, sound.  I can hear mo...
The Sound Quality Of Commercially Pre-Recorded Reel-To-Reel Albums
I’ve had a Teac X-10R since 1981.  During the 80’s and very early 90’s, I recorded about thirty 10.5” reels of old school soul/R&B and contemporary jazz albums.  Each tape is dbx encoded.  I don’t know how, but my dbx tapes sound better than t...
Audio Mirror WAVE tube based line-stage is one of StereoTimes 2023 Most wanted Components
For $13K, you'd think it would also have a Tape Loop.
Ripping CDs
+1 @soix Excellent suggestion About 5 or 6 years years ago, ripped my CD collection to an Innous Zenith MK2  music streamer and boxed my CDs up, and haven't looked back.
Why do people like reel to reel players?
In the 80’s, I recorded thirty 10.5” reels of Maxell 35-180 and Ampex Grand Master tapes. At the time I had a Rodex professional mixer, two Technics SL-1600MK2 turntables, and two Technics CD players. Everything I recorded was dbx encoded. dbx eli...
2024 Audio System Wish List
I’ve been going back and forth with GIK on room treatment and plan to get started in January or February.  I have a small listening room (~12x16) so I’m doing near field listening.  I really like the sound of my system as is, so I’m going to start...
The dangerous world of Reel-to-Reel Tape
@atmasphere I considered trying to bake the tapes, but at that time in my life, I had neither the time or inclination to do so.  I do have a head demagnetizer. It came with a Teac reel-to-reel maintenance kit, which has just about everything one n...
The dangerous world of Reel-to-Reel Tape
When my Ampex tapes went bad, I found out they were very prone to SSS (Sticky Shed Syndrome) SSS Syndrome. List Of Known SSS Tapes.
The dangerous world of Reel-to-Reel Tape
@kraftwerkturbo It depends. I purchased a case (10 reels) of Maxell 35-180 UD tape in 1981.  A few years later, I purchased two cases (20 reels) of "Ampex GM-3600 Grand Master Professional Recording Tape."  From the mid 90’s to the mid 2000's, ...
The dangerous world of Reel-to-Reel Tape
@thom_oz  I hope you mean that the dbx box preserved the dynamics of those recordings you were capturing. Me, I wouldn't want the original dynamics altered in any way when taping (it audibly "pumps" if you push dynamic restoration more than 5-8%...
The dangerous world of Reel-to-Reel Tape
For some folks it offers a different sound signature than either digital or vinyl.  For others, it is an experience unto itself-  perhaps a unique sound, or perhaps a trip down memory lane that can never be recreated any other way. @knittersspo...
The dangerous world of Reel-to-Reel Tape
I purchased my Teac X-10R R2R in 1981 while stationed in Germany.  During the 80’s and early 90’s I recorded 30 reels of my favorite vinyl albums.  I encoded all of my reels using a dbx 244 Type II noise reduction unit.  The 224 not only removed a...
Streamer Comparison and Suggestions
I’ve used an Innous Zenith MKII for about 5 years and have no plans to upgrade. When I first started using Roon, I was upscaling and using DSP, which sometimes caused playback problems. After a while, I relized that I didn’t need upscaling or DSP ...
Bose 901 Series V Questions
+1 @yogiboy Awesome writeup and spot on. Back in the early 80’s, I ran my 901 equilizer and dbx 3bx range expander through the signal processing loops in my SoundCrafsman SP4001 equalizer/pre amp.  Those were the days.   I had the original 901’s...
Rediscovery
I have about 500 CDs.  I ripped them to my Innous Zenith streamer and sold my CD player.  I find it very convenient to play a ripped CD from my streamer instead of feeding them into a CD player.  I stream from Qobuz and Tidal, but vinyl and my R2R...
