LP eccentricity, spindle hole center,The fix??????
You could use an extra mat or mats to raise the record so that the spindle isn't in the way and center the record visually. This requires no modification of spindle or record. VTA will be off, of course, that's the part that makes it a less-than-p...
If cables can break-in, can they then wear-out?
Yes, when cables wear out, you'll lose air around the instruments, palpability, PRaT, gestalt, harmonic richness, rhythmic chunkiness, etc. Even your wife will be able to hear it from the next room, it's not subtle. 8^)
I am sick of cables
Be careful when putting a fork in your cables. You might short them out ;-)
Promotional copy - any different in sound quality?
Most of the WLPs I have are CBS (Columbia/Epic). The ones from the late 50s and early 60s are pressed on quieter vinyl than the standard issues. Same thing with the Mercury promos I have, except the promo labels on these are either gold or sort of...
A hard look at the effect of cables
"Bring back the stereo console and have everything hard wired and stop all this craziness!". Actually I think it's going in opposite direction. Wire has acquired such magical properties in recent years that soon we will be able to eliminate speake...
James Randi vs. Anjou Pear - once and for all
Even if I took that test myself and heard a huge difference between those cables, I still couldn't bring myself to spend $7500 or some other exorbitant amount of money for a couple of pairs of wires, I'd feel like a fool, even if I did think the e...
Building high-end 'tables cheap at Home Despot II
Teres is also going to be offering a replacement motor/idler system for the Garrards, I read (FWIW). Maybe for Lencos some time too, ya never know ( turn it sideways? ;-) ). Obviously They actually listened to idlers and found out how good they ar...
Differences-Thorens 124II vs. Garrard 301/401???
There is one difference between the 301/401 and the 124 : the 124's idler wheel is driven by a belt between the the pulley and the idler. What sonic effect this has I don't know from any personal experience. I love my 301 though :-).
Garrard 301 45 lever sticks
Sounds like it might be the part of the mechanism that keeps it from changing speeds while the motor is switched on (44), maybe the pin doesn't move out of the way? The best thing I can think of is look the underside while you try to operate the s...
Personal turntable/cartridge evolution
Started with BSR changers, then a rat-shack DD, then a belt drive or two (used a Thorens for many years), now using a Garrard 301. So I went from idler to DD to belt, and back to idler. I'm enjoying my records more now than I ever did :-).
Can you imagine a world without vinyl?
Hey, we all listen to analog! CD, SACD, DVD, MP3, vinyl, tape, whatever. It has to be analog when it gets to your speakers - we can't hear digital. So it comes down to whether you prefer straight analog, or digital converted to analog. ( Or analog ...
Building high-end 'tables cheap at Home Despot II
My 301 has grown, it now weighs about 50 lbs. That's junior size to many of you ;-). Went from 4 feet to 3. If nothing else, it's a lot easier to level with 3 than with 4. I added MDF on top to see how that would change things. I do seem to have t...
Building high-end 'tables cheap at Home Despot II
Idlers rule, baby! Another one of the small Garrard contingent here, 301 played every day ( no Lenco, they are becoming scarce, too bad I didn't find this in '04 ). I probably would not have sweated to build my 'table if it hadn't been for "Home D...
Can we talk about MONO?
There are some mono carts available. I'm going to try one myself at some point. In the meantime, I do as eldartford says : push the mono button and play :-)
