Audible Illusions 3A or Modwright SWL9.0Signature?
I can second Sandstone's comment that the Modwright LS100 pre is worth some consideration. I recently got this preamp and I use the same Acoustic Zen Adagio speakers. I've liked what I've heard so far.
Tube Basics 101: What is a rectifier tube for?
While it is certainly true that everyones' aural accuity, and system resolutions vary; tubes in circuit make a dramatic difference, and one must be nearly deaf to miss their impact.Well, again, I am pretty new to tubes, so I cant say that that cou...
Tube Basics 101: What is a rectifier tube for?
Elizabeth-Thanks again for the basic no-nonsense info.It appears the my preamp has no main cathode follower. The only tubes in it are the ones I mentioned: (2) 6SN7 drivers for the main, (1) 12AX7 and (1) 12AU7 for the phono and the (1) 5AR4/GZ34 ...
Tube Basics 101: What is a rectifier tube for?
Rodman99999-I appreciate that, in the end, every tube in the circuit will matter to the sound and performance. I was fully expecting that reponse.I just wanted to get some sort of consensus as to which tubes would have more bearing on the sound/pe...
Tube Basics 101: What is a rectifier tube for?
Elizabeth (or anyone)-Is it safe to assume then that a 12au7 tube is always a cathode follower? And if I can reiterate or summarize a bit:Sounds like the 12au7 and 6sn7 driver tubes are most important to the sound and should be swapped out first if...
Tube Basics 101: What is a rectifier tube for?
Elizabeth-Actually, the preamp Phono board uses only (1) 12AU7 and (1) 12AX7. I see how you thought it was (2) 12AX7s from the quote I inserted, but if you re-read it again you will see. Also, I double checked on the Modwright website that I linkd...
Tube Basics 101: What is a rectifier tube for?
Thanks Palasr and Elizabeth. Thats exactly the sort of information I'm looking for.Trying to decide which tubes to replace in my preamp and which will give me the biggest bang for the buck. Lot of people wax poetic about the sound quality from swa...
Relate sensitivity/impedance to speaker efficiency
Still hoping for some explanation of the comments I made directly above. But I did hear back from Acoustic Zen this afternoon and they verified that the efficiency of the Adagio floorstanding loudspeaker is about 89dB and the measurement is for 1w ...
Relate sensitivity/impedance to speaker efficiency
Nnck, First lets look at the two options as if they are both on the Power Paradigm (efficiency, 1 watt 1 meter).Under this model the Acoustic Zen is 90/91db. The other speaker is 84/85db if it is also 4 ohms. If you want a tube amp the latter is g...
Relate sensitivity/impedance to speaker efficiency
Thanks for the additional info. Its all quite interesting I think. And I'm still waiting for a response from Acoustic Zen to verify whether their sensitivity rating of 89 for the Adagio floorstanders is for an input of 1W or an input of 2.83 volts.
Relate sensitivity/impedance to speaker efficiency
Elevick-I am mainly concerned with 2-channel stereo right now. And I am mainly looking for help in comparing speakers relative to one another with respect to how well they might perform with tube amplification.Specifically, I would love to hear wh...
Relate sensitivity/impedance to speaker efficiency
Thanks for all the info. It's all good to know and I feel that I'm learning a lot.To get into some specifics as Mmike84 suggested - A couple specific speakers I am considering are the Dali Helicon 800 and Acoustic Zen Adagio. The Dali Helicon 800 ...
Dali Helicon 800 or Acoust Zen Adagio in this room
Duke-Interesting comments. Both speakers are rated basically the same as far as frequency range at the low end (Adagio actually lower at 30Hz and Dali at 31Hz - the same, basically). One big concern about the Dali is the large depth to the cabinet ...
Adding tubes to SS system-Tube Preamp Amp or Int?
Thanks again guys. I am understanding the graphs much better now. My question now is concerning both of your comments that the impedance and phase shift graphs or specs I choose as examples are maybe not "tube gear friendly speakers". I understand...
Adding tubes to SS system-Tube Preamp Amp or Int?
Larryi and Mapman-Thanks for that info. More things slowly starting to make sense here. I'd like to go over a couple of specific examples if possible to explain further.I should just start with my current speakers - the Vandersteen 2Ce. Specificat...
