The use of equipment as "tone controls"
Anything by Behringer makes Radio Shack gear look like high end audio.
VANDERSTEEN 3 A SPEAKERS
I had a pair of 3A Signatures that I vertically bi-amped with Counterpoint SA-220s. The combination sounded amazing, significantly better than running a single amp.Perhaps those amps were the exception, being able to handle the load.
Pathos or ...
Yeah, the Stingray is a nice amp, though not a lot like the Pathos. It's a much more 'tube' sounding amp.The Pathos virtue is that it does everything well and is neutral sounding with the factory supplied tubes. Start rolling in some other tubes a...
Modern monitor that images like Celestion SL600 ?
Since I started this thread I bought a pair of Paradigm Signture S4s. Truly wonderful speakers on my Music Reference RM-9, particularly for the price. However they don't even begin to image like the Celestions. So the search goes on.
Mullard EL34 as a choice for your amp.
JJ Tesla's are great EL34s and to me sounded better than NOS Mullards in my Quicksilvers. They're less colored and have wonderful detail.
Music Reference RM9 - user comments please
I've got the Siemens EL34s in the RM9 SE, and just ordered a set of the KT88 RAMs.I hope you'll post back here after you've had a change to try the KT88s and let us know what you think.
Modern monitor that images like Celestion SL600 ?
I'll hang on to the SL600s and use them, no doubt about that. I'm just curious if anything else creates that amazing image but without the rolled of high end.
Which speaker? paradigm s2 vs totem rainmaker
If you haven't heard the Paradigm Signature series you really haven't any idea how good a speaker they are, head and heals over anything else in their lineup.I have S2s and I think they're amazingly good and just purchased the S4s. For a change of...

I was running the original EL34s that the amp shipped with and the amp sounded great. Talk about long tube life! Roger's statement that you'll get up to 10,000 hours on a set of tubes is realistic based on my experience.Roger's suggestion to go to...
Music Reference RM9 - user comments please
Roger went through my 17 year old original RM9 last July, upgraded it to a MKII and retubed it with all RAM tubes. The KT88s are the more expensive ones @ $65 and worth every penny. The amp sounds amazing.I just bought an original RM10 with only a...
Music Reference RM9 - user comments please
Well, there you have it, the EL34, 6550, and KT88 are the best with the Music Reference. Actually this is true. Depending on the rest of the system, the room, your preference in music, and so on, each tube's characteristic will slightly tailor the...
Rebuild a Counterpoint SA-100 or start over?
I've got the last SA-220 to leave Counterpoint sitting here. It's running but I have used it in years. For what the AV mods would cost I've bought an RM-9 and an RM-10. I keep forgetting I have the SA-220 because the MRs just sound so much better.
To biwire or not to biwire, that is the question??
I had my Pathos Classic One II bi-wired to Paradigm signatures with high end audioquest cable, big bucks for 2 - 8' runs. I decided to move the system and wanted to have the speakers further apart so I changed to less expensive but heavier gauge a...
Why does it sound better at lower volumes?
Sounds like you're overdriving the room. As a recording engineer I'm surprised to find people don't understand room acoustics or when they've been exceeded.Get yourself an SPL meter and see what kind of level you're getting to before it goes south...
Vandersteen 2ce Signatures vs 2ce Signature II
I owned a pair of 3s that I sent in to be upgraded to 3As and then again when the Signature series became available. Every upgrade was worth the money and the difference significantI think this is true across that line, pgrades are a good value. T...
