Newbie Question: Why do you need a PreAmp?
In the 1960s, a famous designer of tube amps said "If it sounds good but measures bad then you are measuring the wrong thing" . Distortion is a point on a graph, a sample point like a frame from a movie, and does explain why most people prefer tod...
Newbie Question: Why do you need a PreAmp?
Preamp serves far more than a switching device and volume control. It is literally the heart of an audio system. Ask anyone who owns, for example, a Hovland HP-100 Preamp, CJ Art II, or ARC Ref 2 mark 2. Music takes on a continuity, flow, and emot...
Talon speakers Hawk vs. Peregrine X
Marketing, or lack of it, is probably at the center on the used prices but after the rave reviews on Stereotimes and other places the Peregrine X's price stability is now, apparently, solidly anchored for, at least, the near future. In addition, f...
Best Line Stage Preamp?
I have found the Hovland just produces music in the most compelling way. After owning tons of passive and active designs over the last 20+ years I can confidently tell you that transparency is not the only issue and can in fact keep you from explo...
Tube Shelf Life
As always, much appreciation to all those that provided insight !
time to discuss kt-88's
I really like my Electro Harmonix KT-88EH in my ARC VT-50. The bloom I enjoy without the slight dryness of 6550. Just my 2 cents.
Sim Audio Moon P-5
I had the very latest version before getting my Hovland HP-100 preamp. The P-5 plumbed deep in the bass and had a very clean but very slightly dark sound. The top to bottom continuousness was not in the same league as the HP-100 but you would not ...

How long to burn in Rotel rcd 1072?
I have had luck with a variety of cords including JPS Silver, Z-squared Au/Au, and Synergistic AC Master Coupler. I added dampening pad layer to top panel, brass hats on top of player and big brass cones below. Extremely nice player now with about...
How long to burn in Rotel rcd 1072?
I found this player to be simply incredible especially for the price. Musically compelling and dead quiet. It did take about 50 hours of playing to make it really start to sing.
Wisconsin - Anyone interested?
Sorry about dropping the ball on this one some months ago but my attention was redirected to community organizing and foster dogs that were to be put to sleep and now are happy to have loving moms and dads. I will try to get back to this in a few ...
Swan M200
Nothing all that major except: Sweatshop or near sweatshop labor that sooner or later drives down living conditions and rights of workers the world over and only places a premium on the CEOs that work hard to exploit every inch. And....essentially...
Swan M200
I have really enjoyed mine over the last 1.5 years. Exceptional build quality for the money but it is China and we all know what that means.
CES and thank you, Albert Porter
I can only second my appreciation of the exceptional coverage. Thanks Albert!
Philips 963 SA compatibility
I had problems with a rented movie on my 963SA. Tried cleaning it. No luck. Then I put it in my Panasonic DVD Recorder and it played just fine. Yet my 963SA has played other DVDs just fine. Don't know what the deal is. Guess it does not like 1 of ...
