Marantz SA14 vs. Shanling T-100 vs. Philips 1000
I've just purchased the Philips SACD 1000 (no mods) and have been very impressed with its build quality and sonic performance. Also has a very nice look. Only real drawback is no PCM digital out. I have a cheap carousel player that will digital ou...
Starting out. - need your counsel
I recently upgraded my surround sound/HT system by replacing a Yamaha RX-V995 Receiver used as a preamp only and would recommend that particular unit highly as an affordable means to 5.1 processing. It's no longer made, but a lot of them were sold...
Lifting grounds in the system.
Feel compelled to mention that lifting or disconnecting the grounding conductor (3rd pin) for an audio/HT system (or anything else for that matter) is, potentially, a very dangerous proposition. Instead of lifting the entire system, I'd like to su...

Female Plugs for DIY Power cords
Wattgate sells theirs direct. I believe the URL is wattgate.com. Rather expensive but reportedly of very good quality. Male plugs and recepticles also available I think.

Best Customer Service (Manufacturer)
Vandersteen has always been highly responsive to questions and issues I have put to them regarding their loudspeakers; on one occasion I was able to speak with Mr. Vandersteen personally. Very impressive service, very impressive products.
CD Players that transmit 24bit/96kHz
I have been told that the Pioneer Elite DV-05 DVD/CD transport will pass that signal rate. I own one, but have yet to experiment (this unit does very good job with AC3 and DTS sources).
Best upgrade for the money ?
I am unfamiliar with your CD front end, but if it has a digital out an anti-jitter filter might be a very sound investment. Theta digital makes a good one that's not too expensive, and so does camelot technologies (I use theirs). My own system imp...
Best Subwoofer for music and movies
I've had excellent results with the Vandersteen 2W series. A little tricky to wire up but ultimately the wiring scheme actually is a positive; no real bass management problems to solve other than placement and dynamic balance with the main speaker...
