REGA 600 OR 900
I believe that the 900 has a different mounting scheme than the others, with three outriggers for increased stability instead of the threaded cylinder. Seems like I saw that in a review of the P9, but that was a few years ago......my once "steel-t...
demagnitizing CD s?
Not to derail the magnetic train thread, but what about destaticizing CDs? I've never done it (nor ANY CD tweak for that matter), but I was told that that MAY make a difference with CDs (something about static charge causing "scattering" of the la...
Rega Planet Vrs. Arcam CD 23
Audition the player. It will be a significant upgrade. The FMJ23 will wipe the floor with the Planet. Even the Arcam players in the same price range as the Rega best it IMHO.
arcam or creek for aegis ones
I remember listening to the Aegis Ones through an Arcam 7R and 7SE CD player at the importer (Audiophile Systems) while I was having some work done on my LP-12 and it sounded GOOOOOD, even in the next room.
Freak Me Out
Roger Water's "Amused to Death" Corey Greenburg used to mention this one fairly regularly when he wrote for Stereophile. I decided to take a chance and get it on Dutch-pressed vinyl, but the CD is pretty good too.
Help completing vinyl front end.
I would second the recommendation of the VPI Aries to complement the JMW-10 arm. As to cartridges, low-output coils are the way to go. As stated above, used cartridges can be tricky business - buy new! Choices are myriad (hey, you have to be optom...
Best Zappa album
"Shut Up "N Play Yer Guitar"
Audiogon "RECORDINGS TO DIE FOR" list
Per "the usual" for me, my recommendations are for VINYL versions. 1) Jay McShann - "What a Wonderful World" on Groove Note LP with a bonus 12" 45RPM 2) Bach - Brandenburg Concertos (2,3&5) on Super Analogue LP 3) John Coltrane - "Lush Life" o...
Dunlavy SC IIs
25 X 15. OK, ok, I'll consider the IIIs (at the risk of potential eviction!) IF I come across a pair for 2.5K. Hey, wait, I still have to LISTEN to the speakers (!). All indications are that they are right "up my alley." (along the LONG wall, of c...
Dunlavy SC IIs
Thanks for the input and the optimism! You guys think BIG! I've yet to listen to the Dunlavys (no local dealer), but still suspect that the IIs would be the logical choice given the size of my room. With that in mind, what are the recommended para...
Great Beatles CD
FWIW, I feel that the best version of Sgt. Pepper is the MONO mix. There is a Japanese remastered CD of this, and an Italian copy too (I believe). The Japanese in particular won't be cheap, but worth it IMHO. I don't believe that the "standard iss...
Dave Brubeck-Take Five
I pulled out a near-mint mono original "Six Eye" copy I was lucky enough to find at a Half Price Books (CL-1397) and gave it a spin. Alas, no laugh, no reference. Sounded GREAT though.....
Must -have SACD's
For the Jazz fans out there, Tony Williams Trio "Young at Heart" (CK 69107) is, according to the liner notes, the first DSD (not labeled as SACD per se) release by Columbia/Sony. It was released just prior to his untimely demise. One of the truly ...
Tonearm/Cartridge Upgrade
I would second Sedond's endorsement of the O.L. modded RB-250. The site is www.originlive.com for info on all O.L. products. I believe the site that he did business with is www.stoneaudio.co.uk. I'd recommend pairing the arm with a Denon DL-103 wi...
TIGERLILY "UPGRADE"
If it is on vinyl somewhere, I'd suspect that it would be found as a European pressing. I've looked around and not found it. Good luck! -John
