Which Tannoy?
Short answer: from those 3, definitely Kensington. Long answer:I owned Kenstington SE years ago but I’m still a big fan. Wonderfully musical, good detail, a beautifully balanced speaker. I think the GR series should make it more detailed without m...
Why are equipment racks so expensive?
If you think 3K is a lot you better not look at Critical Mass Systems. I used to think it was stupid, now I own a 3-shelf Maxxum and have some Black Platinum shelves on order for amps. They even have an Olympus rack above the Maxxum. The cost is d...
SOTA NOVA, HR-X VPI, Technics 1200G recommendations?
Hey @lewm, what's your ranking on amazon for the book you just wrote?
SOTA NOVA, HR-X VPI, Technics 1200G recommendations?
Yes, if you insist upon using a "crappy" rack, the SOTA suspension will help. And if you have a lot of warped LPs, vacuum clamp or peripheral ring will help. Also, if you are testing nuclear warheads in your listening room. Yes lewm, if you ins...
SOTA NOVA, HR-X VPI, Technics 1200G recommendations?
The FR64S won’t work on a SOTA - it’s too heavy and the B-60 (or Ikeda base - I have both and I like the newer Ikeda better) might not even fit in there anyways. The FR64S is over 3 lbs. A tonearm can be up to 2.5 lbs max on a SOTA Nova suspension...
Anyone own 200iq and prefer kt150 over kt88
Also on phono stage - realize you're already running a 100 Watts/ch tube power amp that will throw out several times the heat of a typical tube phono stage...and you're concerned about heat from the phono stage in that scenario?? The VAC Ren phono...
Anyone own 200iq and prefer kt150 over kt88
No, the KT150 were pretty awful in my 200iQ monos - killer slam and weight but completely lacking everywhere else. They can hardly even last 5 minutes of listening before I have to yank ’em out and get some sonic relief. I feel like I wasted time ...
Tonearms that work well with better Koetsu stone body cartridges
The FR64S sounds phenomenal with Koetsu stones; any one who’s had that combo will tell you the same. The FR64fx is also quite good if you’re on a budget. Silver vs. copper versions on these arms doesn’t matter too much; don’t stress over it. The s...
What equipment should I invest in next?
That’s a pretty solid setup. Hard topick out any weak link. Used to own Kensington SE and now Canterbury GR - both wonderful speakers. I’m analog centric, so I’d ask whether you have that magnetic Concept arm. It’s very sensitive to feedback/footf...
Borrowing equipment from dealers
@islandmandan Thanks Dan! Yep, Tannoy lifer here too :)
Borrowing equipment from dealers
I find my dealer sponsored in-home auditions to be invaluable. Every VAC piece I now own went through 1-2 home auditions each before I decided to buy. Of course I supplement this with "buy and try" via audiogon/etc - especially with phono cartridg...
Your advice needed, speakers to buy $8K to $13K
Fyne Audio F702 (8" drivers) or F703 (10" drivers). By way of technology and engineering team, they’re the new Tannoy. By all witness accounts I’ve seen so far (I really need to hear them), they’re also modern successors of the "good Tannoy" sound...
I Have Airborne Feedback And Never Realized It...Till Now
Have to say the Townshend guy’s videos make an awful lot of sense. MC is making a lot of sense on this too. Slap your table on one of those platforms and I bet most problems go away - unless maybe your table’s sitting in a bass node/resonance/peak...
Choosing an SUT?
I’m looking at the Zesto Andros Allasso which has variable gain and load. Thoughts on that device? It is quite likely a nice SUT, but the Allasso has a LOT of loading options you'll probably never use with your SoundSmith. It gives you the opti...
What tomearm ?
Buying a used tonearm or cartridge is kinda like buying used underwear. Who wants that? There is nothing "safe" in buying some thing as fragile, delicate, and prone to damage as a cartridge or tonearm I know there is a guy here who always recomme...
