If NOS pre or power tubes became unavailable altogether, what new tubes would you buy?
@bradf They’re chinese. If in doubt, they’re always chinese.I use and love vintage tubes everywhere, except my monoblocks’ KT120. So it would be quite a blow to give those up, but I’d have to go with the Rooski tubes (just trying various flavors u...
Interconnects
Cheetahs or heavily discounted Colorados are both good choices. The Colorado is warmer and more laid back, but has more 3D imaging. Cheetahs are more neutral. For 500 bucks used you may also be able to get a Niagara, which I like better than eithe...
Does anyone have Audioquest red wild or wel speaker cables?
I auditioned a single-biwire 8’ Redwood in my system a couple years ago. Nice cable, but I tuned them down to stick with my biwire of Mont Blanc (prior series; like half an Oak) on bottom and KE-4 up top -- which has slightly less metal overall, b...
Class D Technology
I don’t buy the "gas guzzler" A/B vs. "green" class D arguments for the latter. Kilowatt hours are cheap and relatively clean until you pile up a WHOLE lot of ’em. With typical audiophile usage patterns, and the fact that we’re a VERY small segmen...
Put a lid on it (or not?)
I've been doing this with my Rogue Ares phono preamp. The lid+sides is one piece of sheet metal of relatively low gauge; any disturbance and it rings like a bell -- not a good thing for a tube phono stage. Plus the weird tube cage thingy is ugly. ...
Your single favorite component
Koetsu stone body cartridge. I've had 4 now, and the best one is definitely my new Coralstone. But all of them do much of the same thing -- i.e. everything I want from a cartridge. It's the only component that sounds really good even on its bad day...
Viva, no longer a fan
Thanks for sharing this and calling Viva Audio out -- this hobby needs a LOT more call-outs like this. There is a long list of companies that produce fine quality gear AND show their pride in workmanship by offering exemplary, reasonable cost servi...
Headphone or Rig?
Stax is definitely the way to go with headphones. In the past 2 years I've gone back and forth in my preference between my headphone and speaker rigs, while tweaking/upgrading both. Currently, speakers represent the better overall listening experi...
Would you go all 1 brand for electronics?
I'm running the full line of Rogue's top components: Apollo monoblocs, Hera II preamp, Ares phono. An absolutely fantastic match with my Tannoy Canterbury. There are no worries about sonic matching between components -- they all gel together. The ...
Telefunken in Disguise?
If they were actually Mazda/Belvu tubes, then they might actually sound BETTER than Telefunkens. E.g. with 12ax7 types, I easily prefer the Mazda chrome-plate over either Telefunken variant, and Mazda tubes in general tend to sound pretty damn goo...
recabling my Stax sr-009 to pure copper cable
It's been said that since Stax are largely capacitative devices, low cable capacitance is the most important parameter by far (more so than conductivity). That's why Stax makes the cables flat. And that's why traditional cable design "logic" doesn...
Hot off the press: Yggdrasil review
Grannyring was just making a pretty valid point, geez. No need to jump on him like he stole something from you. I do have a new Yggdrasil running in, actually. It's a nice unit but I think perhaps the R2R vs D-S DAC thing has become a bit of a fad...
Best loudspeaker with coincident/coaxial driver
I love Tannoy and have owned some models over the years (Eyris DC3, Dimension TD10, Kensington SE, Canterbury SE), and heard several more. Lots of great speakers there, particularly the Prestige line. But I'd be wary of the 10A and recommend audit...
Woofer pumping WHY??
The phono stage needs to roll off below 20Hz. Otherwise you're playing with fire, as you've observed. Some phono stages do, and others don't...but it's stupid not to.
Ringing new NOS tube, is it safe?
Certain vintage tubes have a tough time in phono stages or in high gain line stages because of microphonics and/or other noise. You have to consider the gain of the position you're putting the tube in, plus the net downstream gain. Some tube selle...
