the tough question: Which preamplifier? and why
hi tvad:is my quartet of preamp choices amusing, or my dictum, "don't rely on opinions" ?are you suggesting i pay attention to opinions or that my opinion, like those of others should be ignored ?perhaps, you see the paradox in the statement "don'...
the tough question: Which preamplifier? and why
i too am looking for a preamp, but i do not like the ultraverve. i had the opportunity to purchase it and auditioned it for a while. it doesn't sound like a tube preamp.my choices are:audionote kits l2, audiovalve eklipse, cary slp98 with audionot...
Are There Any Good, High Power Solid State Amps?
ask viktor khomenko about the difference between tube and solid state. it is a fool's errand to think you can replicate the sound of tubes with a solid state product.there is no free lunch in audio. if you want solid state you get the solid state ...
Why do Audiophiles feel the need...
i made an error in one of my posts. i mean to say: how useful is an opinion about a component from the owner of the component ? sorry for the error.
Why do Audiophiles feel the need...
an opinion is neither true nor false. if someone owns a component it is still impossible to know what it sounds like. don't take my word for it. it can be proven, mathematically.how useful is an opinion about a component one has owned ?probably of...
"Frightening" or "Relaxing" sound quality?
hi axel:many responses to sound are within our control. one can choose to get angry , or sad, or frightened.we humans are not just passive actors. i think you exaggerate the significance of sound to create fear responses. i will chose to dislike s...
Revelation
we're forgetting the dictum "if it sounds good, it is good". evaluation of stereo systems is subjective. so, if someone says system a is better than system b, it is to that person. since there are no absolutes no system is better than another. rat...
Speaker Technology over the last 10 years
does anyone think great strides have been made in crossover technology, especially with the availability of a such a variety of capacitors and resistors.is it a given that a crossover from 1969 is inferior to one designed in 2009 ?
the classic tube sound & the modern tube sound
thanks all.i am looking for a second preamp. i am considering a cary slp 98, maybe audio valve eklips and audio note kit l2. i focus on the upper midrange/lower treble region.ewwedhome, you have provided info that makes may pause before getting to...
Would you pay to audition speakers
it might be worth it to pay for an audition in your stereo system, to avoid a serious mistake. the cost of an audition may be less than the loss accruing from resale of an expensive component.
"Frightening" or "Relaxing" sound quality?
hi mapman:it's all in your mind. if i listen to the sound of a thunder storm on a stereo, i will not be frightened. there are sounds that are not loud that warn of impending danger that can frighten. it has nothing to do with sound, but rather con...
Chinese equivalent to Sonus Faber?
i owned the sonus faber amator electa. it was not one of my favorite speakers. it was worth about $1500, not $4500, which was the retail at the time.the value in $$ does not match its performance.
"Frightening" or "Relaxing" sound quality?
without being a reactive person, you won't be frightened.the personality of the listener is being completely ignored.opinions are interesting, but some are wild and defy common sense.
Speaker Technology over the last 10 years
what hybrid are you referring to ? the new magnepan uses a panel woofer. i believe it is similar to the bass panel of the 20.1. by the way, i agree that integrating treble/midrange panels with cone bass drivers can be difficult/
"Frightening" or "Relaxing" sound quality?
the hippocratic oath should apply to audio: "do no harm"so where does the harm come from ? i think, mainly peaks in the upper mids/lower treble. these peaks are not relaxing, but not frightening either.balanced frequency response or a slight atten...
