differences between tube and solid state designs
i think the differences between vintage tube amps and especially the cj mv 125 and current tube amps , excluding set amps, is greater than the difference between current tube amps and solid state amps.i think what has happened over the last 25 yea...
soundproof a door
i have an idea. buy her a pair of earphones used to block out the sound, especially suited for people who work in a very noisy environment.if that doesn't work, ask her to move the tv into another room so you can enjoy the stereo while she watches...
Isolation transformer benefits?
as with any audio gear, if you have an opportunity to audition before you buy, it is worth listening to an isolation transformer.since all isolation transformers are not created equal, you may have to listen to several before finding one you want.
minimze ambiguity when describing audio components
gunbei, you have good ears and clear prose. i wish all reviewers followed your example of clear and concise expression.
minimze ambiguity when describing audio components
hi gunbei, i think you're onto something. if you mean that the sound of the wood of the drum stick was more noticeable relative to the cymbal using the audience cable, relative to the acoustic zen, then i believe you have communicated clearly.woul...

hi plato. the problem is not definition. its perception. how confident can one be of hearing an elevation in spl in the range 1khz to 3khz. without a spectral analyzer, such a statement would be a conjecture.however describing the "sound" of instr...

there is a broader problem sdcampbell. it's variation in perception.if the word bright is used, maybe you hear an elevation in sound pressure between 100 hz and 3000 hz and you use the term bright.i might not perecive what you perceive when listen...
pick me a cd player please-3k to 4k budget
go vintage young man.the cal aria or cal tempest are good picks.nothing wrong with a sonic frontiers cd player.if you want to go on the cheap, under $1000, try an audio note cd2, with a ge 5751 black plate tube.

hi avguygeorge, i agree with you. when two people listen to the same system, there will be 3 opinions.when the two listeners tell a third person, they may use different adjectives to describe that system, confusing the third person, or they may us...
What is Better? SS Amp+Tube CD OR Tube Amp+SS CD
if you stick to current production equipment and consider tube amps, other than triode amps, it probably makes little difference whether you use tubes or solid state. well deisgned tube and solid state amps, tend to sound alike these days.regardin...
listening to music in the car
hi sbrtoy. my distaste for extended high frequency has no relationship to my hearing. iwas tested about 6 months ago.i have a preference for attenuated high frequency. i like a slope in the treble, starting at 1khz, down 1db, then 2k at 2db, then ...
MAPLESHADE RECORDINGS
i own several maple shade recordings which i don't listen to. i would like to get rid of them.from an audiophile perspective, the sound is wonderful. but the music is uninteresting and there is something about the sound that is not natural.i would...
Optimizing my CD Source - what to do?
if you don't mind buying an older player, consider the cal aria or tempest, for a very tube like presentation.
best digital set up 2006
my favorite digital set up exceeds your budget. it was the zanden dac and some transport which i heard at the stereophile show in nyc back in 2004. for somewhat less money i would recommend the original cal tempest or aria.
canary audio cd 100 better than bluenote koala?
i auditioned the koala in my stereo system for over a week. during that time i changed the tubes several times.the result was not much difference in the sound regardless of the set of tubes i used.i found the cd player presentation to be very un t...
