Do the big Maggies play LOUD
It seems to me that asking for speakers to play really LOUD is like asking for a car to do 150 MPH top speed. I agree that 0-60 in 5 or 6 seconds is fun, but how often do you drive 150 MPH? I have a pair of Maggie 3.6s, and I like to listen at lou...
Frisell/Krauss subliminal Pink Floyd Tribute ??
Olson Jr. I gave it a listen with your thoughts in mind, and though I can hear the similarities you mention, my guess is that it is probably not intentional, but who knows? I really like Frisell's work. Another of his that is a bit similar to this...
Unique Guitarist Andy Mckee Found on YouTube
Doorman, I had a chance to see Mckee, Ross and Manring at a small venue in Minneapolis just over a month ago. Very memorable performances by all. If anyone gets the chance to see any of them or all of them, don't pass it up!
Best sounding cd in your collection
1. Louise Taylor "Written in Red". Extremely dynamic presentation, very expressive vocals. Chris Isaak "Heart Shaped World".2. Bill Frisell "East West". On the West disc, Bill is sitting on my sofa extreme right, way outside the speakers. Maybe so...
CJ sound
I picked up a used Premier 17LS last spring and love it. I would say it is not dark sounding at all with Maggie 3.6's and a Bryston 4BSST. Lots of shimmer, detail, wide soundstage with good depth. I think that room size, and speaker placement cons...
Ray LaMontagne - Got the Stuff
Missed him in Minneapolis, but here is a link to a review and a short post concert article on him. I really like "Trouble" as well as "Till the Sun Turns Black". I wanted to see the concert, but was unable to. Please cut and paste http at the star...
Best female vocals on CD
One of my current favorites is Louise Taylor. Her most recent CD "Written In Red" has fabulous sound, complex soundstage, dynamic instrumental passages, and very expressive vocals. Try to listen for her inhale at the end of the title cut.
Best female vocals on CD
Over The Rhine's Karin Lindquist's vocals sound close mic'd with an incredible amount of air and breathiness to them. Good Dog, Bad Dog is a favorite CD with dynamic, dramatic acoustic instrumentals also. She also has a very interesting delivery a...
Jazz recommendations?
Diary, an album by Ralph Towner of Oregon from 1973 features him on both piano and guitars(12 string and classical) and is highly recommended for your purposes. I also can second the recommendations for fellow ECM artists: Ketil Bjornstad "The Riv...
Keeping it LOW
How about an avant garde jazz piano CD? Paul Bley plays a Bosendorfer Imperial concert grand piano with Gary Peacock on double-bass and Paul Motian on drums on the 1999 ECM release "Not Two, Not One". Typical great ECM production quality. The lowe...
