VPI HW-19 Springs
My MkIII had two black and two silver springs, all with black plastic top caps with three silver metal hemispheres on top (these made sliding the chassis easier for centering in the base). The different colored pairs of springs were supposed to be...
A Tribute to the Sequerra MET 7
The Met-7 MKIIs do nothing extraordinarily well, and nothing extraordinarily poorly. What they are, is extraordinarily balanced, conveying the heart and soul of music in a very non-audiophile way. I bought a pair in 1989, and still have them, 20 y...
What's the best Phono preamp under $1000??
The Sutherland battery-powered PhD might be a good low-noise alternative to mate with your ARC. I've seen a few, used, at $1100-$1200, but you might get lucky and find one within your $1000 budget...or convince yourself that 'just a little extra' ...
What's the best Phono preamp under $1000??
New? Used? MM or MC? Tube or SS? Is a remote important? How many line inputs are needed at minimum? What are the partnering components? A preamp is a tool for a job - so to get the right one, you have to define what the job requires.Cheers, Mark
Which DVD player
I'd go a different route: Toshiba 2d gen HD-DVD player, for superb HD, great (better than Oppo) upconverting, and very good sound [note that this is a projection of 2d gen performance, based on current models]...and then get a Rega Apollo, modded ...
Spectral Amp and Pre-Amp Manuals?
Thanks, Joe. I called Spectral today; they're not sure they still have the manuals I need (and the person who might know definitively is out 'til next Monday). So I'll still have to pursue alternative routes, and hope someone here might be able to...

MIT & Spectral -- but Which MIT?
Thanks, all -- I think the vote for Joe Abrams is unanimous! :-) I shall contact him -- but I hope you don't mind if I continue to pick your brains, too. My experience with MIT speaker wires goes only so far as the original MH750 and 750 Shotguns ...
TAS new look-the end is near?
"HP needs to start over"? Hmmmmm...I wonder if he has an exclusivity contract with the current TAS management for his audio musings? Or might he be 'permitted' to start a small-format publication, or even a newsletter, NO ads :-), and build up a s...
TAS new look-the end is near?
TAS is still the best mag overall IMO, and has been so through its many, many ups and downs, notwithstanding some still competition from Fi, aeons ago. I have every issue of TAS (as well as Fi, Sounds Like... - anybody remember Jeff Goggins foray ...
Jokes of and about audiophiles
How many double-blinders does it take to change a lightbulb?None -- they can never achieve a 95% confidence level that the bulb is dead.
Budget phono stage- advice appreciated
Slawney -- about the cube's dynamic limitations, you're right, it's very noticeable. I never really came to grips with what the cube was doing wrong, as while dynamic compression was audible, in my listening sessions the compression seemed to affe...
Best speakers for 2A3 SET amplifier?
Trelja -- Is 100 - 110 Db necessary to replicate the full dynamic scale of an orchestra? Having sat in the orchestra with SPL meter in hand, even Wagnerian climaxes barely nudged into the 95- 97 Db range, orchestra in fullest throat. I think what ...
Best speakers for 2A3 SET amplifier?
Phill -- Not to beat a dead horse, but there are many who think that horns play no music well (I hasten to add I'm not in that camp -- but also to add that I've never heard a horn that plays "everything" well). And your response was, to quote full...
Most achingly-beautiful music
Khrys -- ROTF! "Presenile" is just about right -- sheesh, who cares if my remnant of sanity lasts, as long as my ears do!?! Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto is beeyooteefull to me, but I admit that some find the dissonances and sheer, pyrotechnic tec...
