DACs that do well without a preamp
@itsjustme  As an over-simplification: the only DACs to truly do volume control well are based on 32-bit, sigma-delta DAC chips Have you heard or considered the Cees Ruijtenberg (Metrum then Sonnet) DACs that control volume, i.e., change the o...
Nearly all manufacturers do not advertise/exhibit their product measurements? Why?
@melvinjames +1 Not unlike missing a shot at one end and then running down court and committing a foul at the other end out of frustration.
To couple, or not to couple, that is the question
Even with springs, damping and resonances play a role in the effectiveness.  Robert's points, Max's springs, Herbie's elastomers, or the NHL's pucks will each perform differently wrt the transmissibility, amplitude, and frequencies of vibrations f...
To couple, or not to couple, that is the question
Hello Robert – You are correct, "decoupling" implies totally separating two systems.  The proper term would probably be “damping” but this is one of those industry slang issues.  Decoupling is commonly used in the soundproofing and audio products ...
Boutique caps in oil... reliable?
I was planning a DIY high pass but instead recently added a Marchand XM46 XLR Passive Line Level Balanced Crossover between my preamp/buffer and my amplifiers, which rolls off my main speakers at about 45Hz.  I cannot hear any noise or other ill...
DACs that do well without a preamp
Sonnet Morpheus at around $2K used or Metrum Jade at even less should both sound pretty good. VC is implemented by changing the reference voltage so no bits lost.
Snake oil of the year?
I wonder if he tests fuses?
To couple, or not to couple, that is the question
I for one am certainly all about "becoming one with the understanding of worldly functions" which is why I am deeply shocked to learn that the decoupling solution I am using under my speakers is "based on theorems or storyboarding marketers."  Sim...
Boutique caps in oil... reliable?
Check out this variety of caps from Jupiter Condenser. For a vintage sound paper-in-oil capacitor, you might look at their VitaminQ or Comet caps.  According to Jupiter: These capacitors utilize the same polymerized impregnation fluid developed...
To couple, or not to couple, that is the question
Over the years, I have tried multiple types of spikes (including Audiopoints) into the concrete floor beneath my 175 lb main speakers (inc. stands), and also under my two 160 lb subs (inc. stands).  About a year or two ago, I removed the spikes an...
Why do so many sellers take offense to offers on their listings?
@rhodes  Life is nothing but negotiating.  Sounds like a page from a Grant Cardone book...Sell or Be Sold!
To couple, or not to couple, that is the question
@grannyring  I believe you have a SA stand as I do also.  As an inexpensive solution, I use velcro looped around heavy power cords and then around the rack above to help relieve the weight hanging off of the component.  It is not something that c...
Why do so many sellers take offense to offers on their listings?
The difference is when you purchase directly from the manufacturer/factory shipping damage is taken care of by having them ship out another new speaker but when buying used both the buyer and the seller are often SOL in the case of shipping damage...
Why do so many sellers take offense to offers on their listings?
I can’t remember ever “taking offense” to a low offer or being inundated by low offers to the point of irritation.  You list something for sale, you should expect responses.  At least they are looking at the ad.  I might not take an offer on day 2...
To couple, or not to couple, that is the question
If you search back, you will find about 101 posts on this topic and many answers to wade through that both support and refute the benefits of decoupling. Folks around here have been decoupling speakers with things like hockey pucks well before the...
