Crank it up just once
"Back in the day" I fried two ADS L810 tweeters during a party. I could blame it on the disco music (it was the 80's - ugh!), but I got to believe it was caused by bridging the NAD's. Oh well, I got new tweeters. Have some fun. BTW, good power usu...
BAT SS power amps?
My VK500 was bettered by the McCormack DNA500. That said, for the current used price, the BAT is a good value. In my system at the time, the BAT had a musical midrange, was a touch dark and rolled off in the high frequencies (not necessarily a bad...
Selling to someone in another country
You do not need to accept the bid from the "joker-scammer" with no feedback, because you said US-Canada only. However, if there was a high bidder who met your qualifications and who bid above your reserve, then you need to sell to that person. Jus...
Impact of Calypso 6922 tubes?
It is a little early to say. Upon initial listen, the Calypso is very good, as I expected it to be. I like the bass better than on my (previous) decked out Atma-Sphere MP-3, and the whole presentation is clear and dimensional, but it is a differen...
Aesthetix Calypso How many versions?
In my research, it seems there has only really been one change, which had to do with resistors. There were some noisy stock tubes reported for awhile, and that now seems fixed. There were also some hum problems reported with Ayre amps, but Ayre ch...
Calypso owners - question about muting & start-up
Perfectionist, I didn't realize the switch was on the back panel, a nice feature and good in my case. Any thoughts in the event of a power outage (like a midwest thunder storm) where everything goes out at the same time? Assuming the preamp is in ...
Tube pre-amps $3500 under to add "warmth"
Mrtennis, maybe the room acoustics or partnering equipment and cables were not optimal. Not quite sure why you would want a "syrupy" sound, and my guess is you would tire of it. Try the Atma-Sphere, it just sounds right, and it is fun to listen to...
Tube pre-amps $3500 under to add "warmth"
Gjames, at 100K ohms, you will fortunately be able to use most of the tube preamps out there without any sonic penalty. My amp has input impedance of only 10K ohms and was considerably more difficult to match. Have fun.
Tube pre-amps $3500 under to add "warmth"
If your amp is SS, make sure the input impedance of the amp is at least 10x greater than the output impedance of the preamp across the entire bandwidth. Many tubed preamps have rising output impedance at lower frequencies, which could result in a ...
Help w/cables for ss amp, etc...?
Jeff, the Asylum power cord and Canare speaker cable projects are very easy DIY starter projects, inexpensive, and you may find you need to go no further. The VH Audio stuff is also relatively easy to make.
Help w/cables for ss amp, etc...?
The short answer is to keep trying cables until you find what you like. Cable preferences, and the amount you spend on cables, will vary greatly from person to person. Search the posts here at at Audio Asylum and you will find more than a few even...
SS vs Tube Preamps
Good post above by Nsgarch, to which I would only add it is usually much less expensive to retube a tubed preamp than a power amp, and the tubed preamp generally gives off much less heat. Also, the bass control issue extends to tubed preamps as we...
Are you at this point??
Finally, just recently I am satisfied (if not exactly done). I can envision potential technology induced upgrades, especially related to source components such as server based sources or higher resolution digital products such as Blu-ray, etc. Whe...
BIWIRE TERMINALS
Point understood.
BIWIRE TERMINALS
Hey Bignerd, why the attitude? Unsoldering one set of +/- wires from one terminal pair and soldering them to the other terminal pair, is hardly rocket science. It is not a "tweek of the week" but rather a long-term solution for those who believe u...
