B&W 801 Matrix III...which amp to use?? very high quality solid state - would consider classe cam 200's or pass.
Dahlquist DQ-20 Fan club Rant would suggest alon v's or circes.... can be had for $2k to $4.5 k... but they require very, very good electronics.the openness of carls designs is hard to beat.
"Wife Friendly" full range speakers went from alon ii's (wonderful speakers) to audio physic libra (bigger brother to the virgo).. would also suggest the virgo's II's in your situation. you might even get better bass response since the alon II's really like to be pulled out quite a ...

Dahlquist DQ20's vs. Vandersteen 2CE would condsider vandies if you want a "warmer more forgiving sound" or Alon's II or IV instead of the dq 20's... they are a very highly reguarded speakervery similiar yet updated design of the dq-20 (same designer)also, the alon drivers are still ...
Crescendo I or Crescendo II ? i have owned crescendo cables and there are very few I's around....this can be confirmed with straightwire.i did audition a very early pair that might have been I's ( i am not sure....they didnt have the black caps) but they had had a slight mid b...

How good are the B&W 801...Series 2 Speakers ???? still very, very, very good by todays standards.... that cannot be said of the majority of speakers that are 8-10 years old...they are very revealing and need clean, muscular amp to drive them...one of my favorite speakers of all time....
speakers in a bad room agree with Philjolet.. a dipole speaker might work better if you have to place on the short wall due to the figure 8 radiation pattern (output to the sides is cancelled...that being said you can go planar or dipole dynamic(alon)good luck, mike
Speaker position would suggest a dipole. they can be very close to the side walls. so all you have to really adjust is the front/back..alon for dynamic and maggie/martin logan for planer.good luck, mike
Maggie 1.6QR Acoustic Treatment your maggies are dipoles and dont have alot of output to the sides..( would save the side walls for last)would suggest starting with your back wall....by taming the rear wall with damping and see how that goes...if more is needed try using diffusi...
Ic for bass problems straightwire virtuso or crescendo are very full sounding ic's..would suggest starting there.
Copper vs. Silver interconnects i have good luck with the audience au24...it is a very neutral cableanother good cable is the wireworld super eclipse 5 ( silver plated copper). i have found this to be a good match with audio physic speakers. |
