"Litmus test" songs
I often start with a well recorded voice. Sometimes I use the song "I know you by heart" off Eva Cassidy's 'Songbird' CD. If that does not paint a deeply holographic image, sound acoustic and incredibly detailed, and completely free of the speaker...
Your ONE all time favorite love song?
"Ghost In This House" Alison Krauss
Your ONE all time favorite love song?
"Where Do You Think You're Going?" Dire Straits. Remastered "Communique" CD.Changes all the time, but this is one of my current favourites.
Sufjan Stevens 'Michigan'
I am incredibly impressed with Illinoise, and the more I listen, the more it grows on me. It is really excellent and the recording is superb. Went out and got Michigan but found the music to be a little disjointed and not as interesting. Maybe I n...
Dali Helicon 800 Mk2 are stunning ?
Lapierre, the answer to your question is "yes". I found voices in particular sounded slightly more prominent, defined, and spacious vs the 400.
The most haunting music you ever heard?
I would second Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah". I also have the remastered Jeff Buckley version, but Cohen's original on a top set up sounds so rich and holographic and the chorus sends a chill up my spine. I would also put Peter Gabriel's "Dont give...
Dali Helicon 400 or Acoustic Zen Adagio?
Dcstep and Steidlguitars,We will probably be more aligned after this post. I re-read the thread and realise that there may be some miscommunication, and I have to apologise.I owned the Helicon 400 for about 18 months, and upgraded to the 800 mk2, ...
Dali Helicon 400 or Acoustic Zen Adagio?
Sounds like you have a wonderful set up and great speakers. I havent heard the Baby Grands myself. I listened tonight to some of my test classical tracks eg Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet and Schubert's 9th, and specifically listened to the deep bas...
Dali Helicon 400 or Acoustic Zen Adagio?
Dcstep, it sounds very much like this speaker doesnt suit your needs and equipment after 5 amps! I must admit I havent seen this issue in my experience with them, but after 5 amps, is it time to switch to a different speaker?
Dali Helicon 400 or Acoustic Zen Adagio?
Dcstep, I actually found deep harmonic base to be one area that attracted me to the Helicons in the first place. In some respects, the mk1 was slightly better, but there were other compromises that I wouldnt go back to. I use a few tracks for test...
Dali Helicon 400 or Acoustic Zen Adagio?
As an example, I know how these speakers sound driven with 180w of NAD M3 power and sound excellent (as a budget solution), but the base was not absolutely controlled. Very powerful base, though. Also know how they sound with a 180w Gamut amp, and...
Dali Helicon 400 or Acoustic Zen Adagio?
Dave,Your Conrad Johnson will definitely have enough power!I'm driving the Helicon 800s with 180w, and I think it is more than adequate. The lowest power I heard them driven with was an Ayre 70w and I would say that was not enough, so the answer f...
Dali Helicon 400 or Acoustic Zen Adagio?
I have owned the 400 and the 800mk2, with different amps, and heard them with many other amps. I disagree that they are amp sensitive. The sound good on an average amp, but will reveal the flaws to some extent, and they are superb with a great amp...

Gamut CD3 vs Ayre CX-7e ?
Darredon, I use the Gamut DI150 amp and Dali Helicon 800 mk2 speakers. I find the system to be free from what you describe, but found that choosing the right IC (Nordost Heimdal) and speaker cable (Chord epic super twin), plus fully running the sy...
