Preamp selection for a high sensitivity amp ?
If you get a low-gain pre now, you might have to replace it too when you change amps in the future. It might be better to get a pre with switchable gain. Or get the best pre you can find, and just use the lower part of the rotation.
How can I learn how to fix equipment
Good point. Now that I think about it, my eardrums took a hit and I DO need those body parts.
Preamp selection for a high sensitivity amp ?
It is not clear why you want to change pre-amps. Does the volume control work poorly below 9 o'clock? If so, then that is a good reason to change pre-amps. But if your problem is that you want more loudness without distortion, that is a problem wi...
How can I learn how to fix equipment
For mechanical repairs, the self-help approach might work well. For electrical repairs, look for a local community college and sign up for a course in repairing electronics. You will learn a lot faster with a good teacher than you will on your own...
Can I hook up two amps to the same speaker?
You should be a bit intimidated. If you do this wrong, you risk serious damage to your amps. In addition, to what was said above, I've heard that some tube amps do not like having no load on the outputs while the amp is on. That would be a problem...
what should i do?
Before you invest too much hard earned cash into the old gear, making changes that will not improve the value of the amp on resale, you might want to take a listen to some of the modern designs, which are measurably more accurate. I am not saying ...
Benefit of Tri or Quad Wire compared to Bi wire
If that's what he said, Robert Harley was wrong. One of the effects of bi-wiring is to change [slightly] the way the crossover behaves. You are essentially adding some resistance, capacitance, and inductance into the circuit that divides the signa...
The long / Narrow room - system configuration
I find that the room position effects are much more important than the cable effects. As for which position is best, I prefer to sit facing a short wall, with the speakers well out from that wall. So, my advice is keep your system as it is. Whatev...
Help ? with upgrade to budget system
Yes, that is puzzling to me too. It is fine to drive a Klipschorn with a weak amp, although I have seen and heard even those speakers eat up most of the power from 150 watt amps in a large, dead room, but it is absurd to think you will get loud vo...
$3000 Speaker/electronics budget
Newmanoc is right. Hearing the speakers at home is the only way to get a true idea of what will work in an environment. But that is impossible for many buyers. So, we must go with second best, which is to buy speakers that are accurate and have be...
Help ? with upgrade to budget system
I understand that you need to have some idea about what you might be spending on electronics in order to know how much you have to spend on speakers. Nevertheless,I strongly recommend that you settle on speakers first, because the differences ther...
Help ? with upgrade to budget system
Before you spend more money on more watts, figure out whether you really need more watts. You might not, especially since you say that "loud" is not your concern.I think you should upgrade your speakers; that will give you the biggest sonic improv...
which nad amp sholuld I get?
The C320BEE is a wonderful sounding amp. If you want to know whether the 50 watts of the C320BEE is enough, do the following.Buy a cheap digital multimeter which you can get for less than $20. Buy a test CD with a -20dB test tone, [probably better...
$3000 Speaker/electronics budget
I recommend spending about $2500 on speakers and $500 on electronics.
When will your system be enough?
I've been upgrading for 35 years. Should a sane person believe me if I said I would quit?
