Help: Noisy Tubes
Sounds like it's time to send the unit for a check up. Couldbe that some of the operating voltages are out-of-spec onthe high side (failed cap/resistor?) and prematurely blowingout the tubes. Although I recently retubed my LS5mkII withnew Sovtek 6...
ARC LS-5 vs SP-10/11 for Plinius SA-102
I agree with almost everything Jafox says, except the partabout the LS5mkII vs LS5mkIII. I prefer the mkII version tothe mkIII version. I've had the LS5mkII in my system foralmost 8 years now (driving two ARC D-400mkII SS amps) andhave had no desi...
Marantz 2275/2270 vintage receivers
The Marantz 22xx units are terrific. Second only to theMcIntosh MAC series receivers IMHO. I'd rank the Sherwoodsright behind the Marantz. I have 4 70s vintage SS receiversI swap in/out of my bedroom system which is used almostentirely for FM list...

Q. about ARC LS5; & running an all balanced system
Pretty much agree with Jafox regarding the LS5 pre. One ofthe very best ARC ever made. That being said, I prefer the mkII incarnation to the mkIII.I've had my LS5mkII since mid-95 and passed on the mkIIIupgrade. I felt it too analytical with my big...
Comments on Lucinda Williams "World Without Tears"
Can you compare it to her last two? I loved Gravel Road buthated Essence. Makes me hesitate on this one.
Cable Costs Relative to System
As a response to Meta's question: "Is there anybody using $50k audio system. If yes, pleaselet us in on the magic."Well, my system is only $40K, and my wire is anything but"magic," but since no one else has answered:Wadia 860 CDPPanasonic SV-3700 ...
What Goes Around, Comes Around...?
Speaking of Peggy Lee....Anyone happen to see some of the Dinah Shore repeats thathave been playing on the recent PBS fund-raising shows? They showed a 1975 duet with Dinah and Peggy Lee doing"Let's Love" that absolutely blew me away. Can't imagine...
Audio Research CDT-, user I need to hear from you
Used a CDT-1 as a transport feeding a Wadia 25 dac for acouple of years until switching to single box Wadia 860.The unit always worked flawlessly for me. Can't imagine Iwould have ever replaced it if I kept my two-box digitalfront end. Should be a...
Why do McIntosh SS amps cut out?
Faulty relays is an extremely common problem with vintageSS amps of every make and model. Paradoxically, I was toldby a tech I trust that many relays go bad because the ampsare never driven above a few milliwatts on average. Thecurrent has a self-...
Why do McIntosh SS amps cut out?
That's usually a relay going bad. The way to test for sureis next time a channel cuts, instead of cycling the poweroff/on, turn off the speakers and turn the volume up about3/4 for about 5 - 10 seconds. Turn the volume back down tonormal and turn ...
Tube Preamp and SS Amps - How?
Why not just swap your MA-6450 for an MA-6850? From what Ican tell it's the exact same unit except with a tube preampsection. The MA-6450 is a terrific amp. I can't imagine theMA-6850 would be much of an improvement.
volume control problem
I think he's also saying that the mute switch has no effect. If that's the case, then something is wrong with the preamp. The mute on my LS5 completely disengages the outputs so Iwould guess that's the same setup on the LS3. Regardless ofgain and re...
