Dac for Adcom System
I've owned both the Benchmark DAC1 and a Bel Canto DAC3 (sorry, I know this isn't the DAC2). Personally, i learned I couldn't pair either of those with a solid state setup as I found both very analytical/revealing, and that was with a "warm soundi...
TDAC or Havana?
Macdad, do you prefer upsampling and a more detailed presentation? I ask this as the bel canto and ps audio digilink are very similiar to the benchmark dac1 and all these default to 24/192 from what I recall? The tdac goes to 192 as well. It's def...
TDAC or Havana?
And to macdadtexas's point, each system and each person's taste has impact. It's been said here on agon and elsewhere a million times.Goes w/o saying, but tubes, digital cabling and ICs can make one DAC sound miles better than another. I guess the...
TDAC or Havana?
My setup is fairly resolving. I say this as I had a sterile/analytical setup before with a benchmark dac1, musical fidelity a308 and a pair of quad 22l2s. U could hear every little detail but it was brutally harsh with some recordings. My assumpti...
TDAC or Havana?
I own a 2009 Tadac with built in pre and I used to own an MHDT Havana. Both paired with an Empirical Audio Turbo-3.Neither was a cut above the other, plain and simple. The havana may be a bit more resolving/forward, but the Tadac has a built in pr...
DAC with preamp and remote
Tube audio designs tadac (2009 version). I settled on one after owning an mhdt Havana, benchmark dac1, bel canto dac3 and redwine isabellina. The Chinese tubes should be switched out though, otherwise it sounds a bit rough with the cheap tubes. I ...
NOS Tubes for Rogue Tempest II
I have a rogue stereo 90 and run ge 6sn7 gta's. Those and ge 12ax7's. I tried mullard and telefunken 12ax7's and didn't care for them (either too forward or too lean compared to the ge's).
Cardas Clear usb
USB cables can make a profound difference in a computer setup. I've owned at one point or another the poiema, a cryoparts, the polestar and now an axis USB cable. In a computer setup addressing jitter is first concern, then get the digital cabling...
tube amp or int for digital audio?
That question (volume control) is debatable like everything else. Most will tell you yes (use a preamp) but I used the Itunes volume on a mac with several different DACs w/o any noticeable difference in performance. Even now with a preamp in my se...
good DAC under $1000
I have the older 2009(?) version of the TADAC, paired with an Empirical Audio Turbo 3 USB Converter and the DAC has a pair of mullard 12au7's in it along with a Python Helix power cord. That said, it beat out the MHDT Havana I also owned simply due...
Got any DAC suggestions for a Mac Mini server?
I'd second the Havana. I had one for about six months and was impressed with it (paired with a USB converter though). Switched to a tube audio designs tadac (previous version), threw in a set of mullard 12au7s (the Chinese stock tubes are horrible...
Requesting input from iMac users
That setup will be prone to jitter unless your CA840 is able to reclock the signal.Doubtful you'll be happy with the results, but if you already have all the equipment, might as well give it a shot.
any other XLR interconnects i should demo?
tars labs the one ism cables are really nice. I've owned az silver IIs and cardas golden reference and these do the best of both of those. They're a bit more in price, but worth a try. Shunyata's are nice too, but I'm selling mine so can't say tha...
DACs and reproduced sound
anyone that says dacs don't sound different are full of crap. Anyone who says the benchmark gear is neutral or adds no "color" to the reproduced sound is even more full of crap. The thing upsamples, that in and of itself changes the sound, particu...
Use of Preamp versus Digital Volume from Computer
Thanks Herman.I'd heard some time back that Itunes versions 7 and up had dithered volume control that was quite good versus truncated 16 bit volume that was found in earlier versions (Benchmark's website has a write-up on it for example). I can't ...
