Calling All Tube Gurus
Back in the day when tube everything was more common, when a tube went out we would search Dad's tube drawer for one that was the same size and number of pins and replace it.  The biggest concern was trying not to too badly burn your fingers findi...
Are REL the most Musical Subs?
I agree with the above recommendation of adding a second sub to your two channel system.  When I had only one large sub there seem to be areas in the room where the bass was louder or softer with an occasion boom node thrown in.  Adding a second s...
Do You Buy Speakers Without Hearing Them?
Speakers I always listen to before purchase. In many ways that is your stereo system and at least for me, build my components around the sound those speakers generate. I live in the LA area so still have a number of quality hi fi stores in which t...
Integrating speakers into contemporary decor - can WAF ever be overcome?
OK we have the same problem, integrating modern speakers into a circa 1915 room decor. Let me first say that this is a compromise solution where perfect speaker placement is sacrificed to the room aesthetic. With that said the solution works very ...
Two powered subs with bookshelf speakers or two floor-standing speakers?
Aesthetic considerations (room decor circa 1915) and small size 15' x 15' necessitated use of small bookshelf B&W 805's and subs REL T7/x's to blend/hide the speakers in the background.  RELs in the corners, B&W's literally on bookshelves....
Do You Tell Others How Much You Have Invested in Your System?
I tell them I sold my boat to buy a stereo system.  The rest is up to their imagination.
Best sounding CD player
My Ayon CD5s sounds better than records and I play my Bluesound Node through it for that tube warmth.  Streaming is great for auditioning new music, but at least for me having the tangible article in my hand with pictures of the artists, liner not...
Record collecting versus hoarding
Large CD collection, smaller record collection.  For me the fun of ownership comes from sticking my hand randomly into the collection and pulling out something unexpected.  May have been years since I last played that CD.  At least with my collect...
My Major System Upgrades in 2022 and Impact of Each
Great summary of the audiophile process.  Loved how you let your ears and sound scape taste inform your choices.  Not what you should like, but actually what you do like. Enjoy the music!
Your sub experience: Easy or hard?
Recently traded out my older REL T2 for two smaller REL T5x's paired with B&W 805 bookshelf speakers.  Significant sound stage improvement and separation, plus a more balanced low end.  It does take a little time and effort to get the integrat...
Speakers for string Quartets
I listen to mostly violin concertos and string quartets.  B&W 805's audition their full range and pick the pair you like best.
High End Intergraded comparisons, Marantz, McIntosh, Levinson, Luxman....
Have a Marantz PM11S3 built in phono stage, dual mono amp, integrated.  Sound stage as you describe above.  Been playing this amp for ten years.  Very happy with all aspects of it.  I vote Marantz.
A different world
Nearly the identical experience.  Much larger world of music though it is still fun to hold the CD or record in your hand, get off on the artwork, read the liner notes.  Does vinyl and CD (played on an Ayon) sound a bit better? Yes.  Does it detra...
Looking for a SS integrated Amplifier recommendation going into a new system
Marantz PM-10.  Nice speed, full realistic sound when playing classical music.  Excellent mid range on vocals.  Can also rock out.
Upgrade my CD player or futile effort?
Bought a used Ayon CD-5s from an Audiogon member as was stunned by the difference between this unit and my Marantz.  Layers of music I've never heard before.  Depth, nuance, realism, silence. In many ways better or at least equal to vinyl without ...
