Name your favorite sax solo.
Coleman Hawkins has so many beyond "Body & Soul". "Self Portrait" from the "Meets Duke Ellington" album and virtually all of "Hawk Flies High" come to mind. Also Cannonball Adderly has a bunch of great ones, but I particularly like "Can't Get ...
Subwoofer budget max $700: new vs used, brand?
Bob has a point here. Trying to do both pieces at your budget is definitely a bit of a stretch. However, if I were looking for best performance for the $, I'd probably try to stretch, anyway. Here's why:Warning: the words "slow" and "fast" are use...
Subwoofer budget max $700: new vs used, brand?
Rabco,I'm saying that my mediocre (compared to, say, JL or probably SVS) Velodyne SPLRs sound great when properly integrated with a good controller. They sounded pretty ratty when I tried to dial 'em in by ear. My take is that okay subs can sound ...
Subwoofer budget max $700: new vs used, brand?
The 10" SVS sub is $400 and the company has a stellar rep, although that is mostly (I think) built on their larger subs which start at app $600 for the 12" model. However, IME, integration is first priority, before ultimate subwoofer quality. I us...
Best Powered Monitors
NHT is closing out their powered monitors for Marty
Differences in tubes.
If you're still using Triangle loudspeakers, you may want to call Kevin Deal at Upscale Audio in SoCal (see the A'Gon Guild). He's a Triangle dealer and (I think) a Jolida dealer who specializes in tubes/tube amps and may have some useful thoughts...
Pass Labs X250 with merlin VSM-mm/system overhaul?
I use a Joule pre & several different power amps with my VSMs. The right SS amps actually sound great with this speaker - the bottom end really firms up. (And who among us doesn't enjoy a firmer bottom end?) The TAD Hibachi monos are a very go...
Subs for coners or built-in sub inside speakers
Von Schweikert had a speaker (model 300?) w/built-in subs and Vandersteen offers the Model 5 and the Quattro. In the big to mega-buck range, AvanteGarde Horns and Audio Machina offer such models. I'm sure there are some others as well.Marty
Anybody prefer JL Audio or Velodyne subs for rock?
Both subs you mention are tremendous performers - probably overkill for the vast majority of 2 channel applications. I really doubt that you'd hear much difference. You won't go wrong either way...provided that you get them well integrated with yo...
Who's your guitar daddy now?
I've seen EC absolutely tear it up, but I've also seen him phone it in. Sometimes on the same night.Marty
Who's your guitar daddy now?
The phrase I take issue with is "most overrated on the planet". Even if not meant to be taken literally, this is a fair bit harsher than simply "overrated". BTW, I know many folks who agree with Odd's harsher assessment of Clapton - just not me.Marty
Who's your guitar daddy now?
Map,In a weird way, Clapton is a bit like Elvis in that regard. He became the original "face" of the electric guitar (along with Jimi) in a similar way that Elvis became the original "face" of rock n roll. I'd personally argue that Chuck Berry is ...
DVD movies must have
I recently watched "Hancock" on blue ray and found that the soundtrack had a ton of impact. Side note, I found it a far more involving and thought provoking (not to mention funny) Super Hero /Comic Book flick than Dark Knight. I'm really confused ...
Who's your guitar daddy now?
Oddmorning,I've heard lots of people say this about Clapton, presumably because he combines a rather traditional blues approach with limited (compared to some others) technique. But he really has a ton of heart and truly beautiful tone. A player l...
In need of an amplifier...
I've used the TAD Hibachi monos with MMGs (as well as some other speakers) and can recommend the pairing. Very compact and lightweight package, very good sound (notably warm for SS), very good value, very silly name.Marty
