Best Tributes, Covers, Dedications
A new one to consider:Richard Lloyd has a new disc of Jimi covers. This takes a big, hairy set! I just bought it, and haven't fired it up yet, so no comment on the quality. The liner notes are ineteresting anyway, - it seems that Richard Lloyd and...
Rolling Stone top 100 Guitarists - Howe/Van Halen
One more thought - slightly OT. I just picked up a Danny Gatton cd called "Live 9/9/94". He plays a double neck throughout (Tele w/Strat pickups on top, 6 string bass w/Strat pickups below). Bizarrely eclectic set list: Chuck Mangione, rockabilly,...
Rolling Stone top 100 Guitarists - Howe/Van Halen
Reading Duane's response, I forgot that Gatemouth had been omitted from the list. You could argue that his early recordings on the Peacock label were the first "true" rock 'n' roll records. That miss is criminal.MartyPS I had the good fortune of s...
CDs with heavy, fast bass and/or long drum solos
I forgot Jimmy Smith's (w/Stanley Turrentine) "Prayer Meeting". It's an RVG, so some here may disapprove, but I think it's a very fine quality recording of Jimmy Smith organ music, and - if you like this kind of stuff - the program materal is abso...
CDs with heavy, fast bass and/or long drum solos
I was also going to mention "The Hunter". Also the track "We Belong Together" by Rickie Lee Jones as well as several on Peter Gabriel's "Last Temptation" soundtrack would be useful.Marty
subwoofers and panels don't mix
Somewhat further OT here:NHT's lifestyle "woofer" system is being closed out at Audio Advisor (I get their mailers) @ $300 per. This isn't really a "subwoofer", but it puts two 10" drivers in a very slim sealed box (app 6" deep) with IIRC a 200 wa...
Do you ever wonder?
Loomis,In my post I acknowledged that he has a singing voice - I was alluding to the harmonies. OTOH, even Artie Garfunkel couldn't live off his harmonies for a decade. I never really appreciated his songs - maybe they deserve another listen these...
Your First Concert was.....
In 1969 - IIRC - at 12 (or so) years old, I tagged along with my older brother to see Mountain play one of their earliest gigs at the Capitol Theater in Passaic, N.J.Marty
Do you ever wonder?
Anyone who can explain David Crosby?Very spotty songwriter, limited playing skills, trouble with guns, drugs and the law, um...let's say limited sex appeal, and a decent enough voice. How does he keep getting gigs? If you're a lesbian couple and y...
Zu Essence vs Devore Nine vs Maggies
Dave,Since you like Maggies and you're in Austin, here's something to chew on.The smaller Maggie (MMG) runs app. $600, direct from Magnepan with a 60 day return policy. Coupled with a good subwoofer (or 2) and controller, these little panels can b...
Suckout at 40 hertz...less pricey solutions?
Glai points out that using DRC to address a null can be difficult, but it can be done. For example, several manufacturers produce a 12" sub with 1000 WPC. A pair of such subs (especially those with largeish cabinets) will provide 2 kW of amplifier...
Suckout at 40 hertz...less pricey solutions?
The good news is that a 40 hz suckout won't to be an audibly meaningful problem with more than 95% of the music program material out there. However, if you want to address that last 5%, good luck, it's a bitch down that low. You could go with DRC ...
Famous quote - who said it/how does it go.
Sloth,This isn't the only place Billy Gibbons gets overlooked. When Rolling Stone mag did their list of 500 (500!) top guitarists some years back, BG was omitted completely. Very, very strange.Marty
It Might Get Load - documentary
I thought it was called "I Might Get Laid".Oh, no...different movie again.MartyPS Having read quite abit of positive commentary, I'm looking forward to seeing this film.
Famous quote - who said it/how does it go.
I posted the question because I trip across some variation of this quote all the time (most recently Jimi naming Garcia and Jimi naming Irish guitarist Rory Gallagher) and I've often wondered whether it was true or merely apocryphal. I recently ra...
